Help Does wifi turn 3G off?

Kind of a basic question: when you turn wifi on is the 3G turned off? I was thinking in terms of saving battery. Do I need to turn the "Mobile" widget off when on wifi to help with battery life or is that redundant?

I have always been told it does. No reason to question it...

So, I'd just connect to wifi when you can. That's what I do (also to save battery).

There is a setting in the network settings that sets it to use strictly wifi for data when available. Thats how I have it and whenever I am in a wifi area the 3g signal dissapears and I just have the wifi status bar.
