Whoa, there cowboy. Your cited statistics are great headlines and click-bait, but they are hardly relevant to the topic of well-trained dogs. Even your cited references go on to state that the majority of deaths attributed to dogs are from the transmission of rabies by wild or feral animals and not domesticated companion or working animals. They certainly wouldn't come under the heading of "well trained dogs" and I certainly won't be bringing a rabid wild dog into my house. I refer back to the source that YOU used, the CDC who has shown that in the U.S. death by dog attacks are less than 50 per year.
And FWIW, the CDC also has statistics about
rabies in the U.S. The important numbers being human infections being rare -- about 1 to 3 annually -- and any of the cases in the last 10 years that were caused by dogs were outside the U.S.
And my responses were triggered by the response of another that claimed that 'humans dont deserve dogs' or 'dogs are better than people', or similar.
The exact quote is
"Humans, do not deserve dogs. Dogs are easily the best creature on the planet, while humans on the other hand, are indisputably the absolute worst!"
It is a bit of hyperbole pointing out that dogs, especially of the well-trained variety have many traits sadly lacking in many humans. Devotion, loyalty, forgiveness, etc. From a purely moral and ethical perspective, with dogs being responsible for <50 deaths while humans accounted for more than 16,000 murders (not accidents, but deliberate killings) you can see there is quite a disparity.
I would call that admiration, not worship, but we need not play a game of semantics. It's clear you don't like dogs. That's fine, but it seems to color your judgment a bit too far to the negative.
And as for 'well trained' dogs, the best trained ones that I have ever seen were trajned in ways that I am positive that dog worshippers would not agree with.
You've been watching too much late night TV. If you are implying that cruel methods are used to get dogs to do tricks for entertainment, or to turn them into animals that fight ruthlessly -- to the death, unfortunately that does happen, but there are laws against that. Laws enacted because we as a society value dogs as pets, as companions, as helpers and working animals. The best trained dogs are those who save lives or improve out quality of living. Go ahead and tell any military or law enforcement K-9 unit that they are cruel or somehow abusing their animals. Or, just refer to them as "animals" and see how far that gets you. Tell anyone who trains guide dogs or who NEEDS a guide dog, that they are harboring a dangerous creature ... And what about ranchers, farmers, shepherds? Hunters? Dogs love to work and want to please all for a bit of food, shelter and companionship.
no dog has any concept of personal space
Wrong. Dogs are extremely territorial. The issue is that you believe they do not respect what you think is your entitlement to territory above lesser creatures. They simply do not understand it. Dogs are highly social, and for the most part curious and friendly.
Cats understand personal space, so obviously this is not beyond the understanding of animals- just stupid ones.
All cats understand is that they want to be far away from humans until they want something. They aren't smarter, just more selfish. In that respect, humanity is more feline than canine.
Dogs are not perfect. Dogs are not gods or superior. They are a beneficial and valued member of many cultures and societies, but they also present some risk. Just like driving and owning a car responsibly, you must also own, raise, train and care for companion animals responsibly. There are those who don't and whether out of ignorance or malice, are wrong. But, the statistics demonstrate that well-trained domestic dogs are not only safe, but beneficial for society as a whole.
