Don't Do It

I was recently able to update to 4.0 (ICS) on my n7000.

It ruined my phone.

Apps constantly force close and/or tweak out (maps included), most of my apps look less optimized for my phone.

GOSMS stopped being able to update and display facebook photos next to the contact in my sms conversations.

Battery life is considerably worse.

The status bar brightness swipe doesn't work anymore.

Settings is permanently in the pull down menu. (just an annoyance)

I'm not sure how many of you use TouchWiz, I use GoLauncher, so as far as that interaction, there's really no difference.

power and home don't take screenshots anymore, neither does the volume button and power.

s-pen snapshots take forever now, I have to do it at least twice and hold it now instead of it being instant.

AND MOST IMPORTANTLY, my home button doesn't work all the time... most of the time, when I am in an app, i have to hit the home button at least twice for it to actually exit the app.

I'm not a root guy, but I'm actively seeking out how to do it just so I can revert back to Gingerbread. Updating was a HUGE mistake, and coming from iPhone, updates always improved the phone. Upgrading to 4.0 has actually made me consider switching back to the new iphone in a few months and just jailbreaking.

I think dont do it is a slightly ott when others are very happy..

Have you tried doing a factory reset? Hardware problems I doubt are related to ics but stand to be corrected.

As for ip updates always improved it I disagree...and anyway, whats the difference between IP3 and 4 and 4s?!? lol

Yeah, it was a bit dramatic, but it's been driving me nuts... so I went there.

I did a factory reset today and I'll update over the next few days to see if it fixed things. My home button worked fine up to the time where ICS took over my phone, so maybe it's a coincidence, but I find that hard to believe.

iOS updates always added things that the phone didn't have prior (things stolen from Android :)), but there weren't new, annoying glitches in the type that I've found with this update. I understand that Android is a little more fragmented and it probably has a lot to do with apps not catching up yet, since 4.0 is so new and rare, but I guess that's one of the advantages of having a tightly controlled ecosystem like iOS. This was my first Android update and coming from iOS, it wasn't the experience I was used to in the past.

one thing I found - battery drain was excessive using Go SMS. Not sure if its not been optimised yet for ICS but I uninstalled it and went 'back' to Handcent. Battery is fine now!

actually worked fine with me. Battery wasnt ALL that great but a quick rom swap and that solved that. till i crashed the internal SD.

Ice Cream Sandwich is a major step update from Gingerbread. It's not just a maintenance release. It's like updating from Windows XP to Windows 7.

I was chatting with somebody at a Samsung Service Center. I asked him whether or not it is a good idea to update to ICS. He said that there is nothing wrong with ICS. The problems users are having are caused by incompatibility between Apps and ICS. So, he suggested me to use GB while waiting for the next update from other apps (which might come out somewhere between a few weeks to a few months).

Personally, I would stay with GB for a while. I found some problems in the Note and the S3.

as one who has tried out perhaps 7 or so different custom ICS roms, I have never looked back.

I rooted my phone using the rootgalaxynote.com advice.

The applied the Chinese Repack ROM, then immediately flashed over it using a custom ROM.

I have finally settled for a great "vanilla" ICS rom Paranoid Androd which is extremely good, stable, and flexible in that you can specify tablet modes and custom resolutions for both the OS and the apps themselves, including landscape rotation of the OS views (homescreens), 360 degree rotation, and a load more features, which just are not available with TW versions.

You do use the S apps, but there are enough other apps in the Play Store to more than make up for this.

As long as you research thoroughly the rooting procedure and approach with caution, you will not have problems.

Again, I can heartily recommend rootgalaxynote.com for all help consistently with rooting and roms.

Incidentally, i would recommend rooting which applies the Clockwork Recovery mod - this gives you the ability to do a factory reset and also wipe the caches which may well be what's causing the problems.

I installed the 2nd custom rom without wiping caches and it just forced closed most apps, froze up, etc etc. I panicked but then wiped the caches and the rom worked brilliantly.

With the current Rom i am using I would not consider a TW based Samsung "nannied" stock version simply because of the flexibility this Rom gives me to modify almost everything to my own needs.

Finally, as to the apps i am using with no problems...

SKYPE

AI KEYBOARD (CAN BE A BIT IFFY WITH CUSTOM RESOLUTIONS :-) ) - THIS IS SO POWERFUL.

FREE NOTE (better in some ways than S Note)

havent tried many games for it. Am more a business user.

I also run a bluetooth keyboard and mouse from logitech

the way I look at the ICS problem / bricking issue....its in GB too - nothing knew then. Theres no need to wipe so why do people do this?

If ICS was such a big problem, Samsung would've pulled it. Therefore if an update bricks your device really its samsungs responsibility to replace it.

Apps are being optimised for ICS. Just check before you download anything new.

There appears to be a couple of bugs but there were in GB too.
