Help Double and triple contacts

I just got a new phone and the verizon people activated it and moved my contacts from the old phone. Now I have double and triple contacts showing up.
All are tagged as "backup assistant plus". I am assuming this is a verizon backup "cloud"
I read one way to fix is select a contact that is doubled and hit menu and join.Before i do this and make things worse, I wanted to check with others.

I sync my contacts normally with microsoft exchange (for work contacts) and google for personal contacts. So when adding new contacts that are personal i make sure to tag them as gmail.
I also see this phone allows me to go to a contact and edit to change what account they are associated with, but with over 1000 contacts I am hoping i do not have to do this one by one.
Maybe i could disconnect sync, delete all contacts on phone and then activate sync again??
I am nervous and not really good at the technical side of these phones.
If anyone has any suggestions I would appreciate it. Also, please provide step by step if you would so i don't mess things up.

I have tried that, went to customize and selected microsoft exchange and gmail. But it only shows about 10 contacts. It is as if all the contacts are considered "backup assistant" now.
Maybe I need to sync again or something??

In my gmail account, all of my personal contacts are still there.
 
both gmail and exchange are syncing. they actually synced at 12:30 pm. at least that is what it says when i go to them on the phone.

although, being i am not that smart with this stuff, could that mean they are just syncing email?
if that is the case, how do i check for contact syncing?

if the contact syncing is indeed off, if i turn them on, is there a chance it would sync all the contacts multiple times like they are on my phone, or is exchange and gmail smarter than that?
 
I turned on gmail contacts sync. Then in gmail, i did the merge duplicates. Worked perfect. Thanks.
Now I am scared to do the exchange account, it would really be bad if it double or tripled those up, there are a ton. Not sure if exchange takes care of duplicates on it's own or if it is as simple as gmail to merge duplicates.
 
I ran into this when I first got my phone. I ended up having to factory reset and as soon as you get to wizard setup screen uncheck sync contacts then don't enable backup assistant. I also called verizon and told them to block it since I don't use it.
