Double contacts loaded!

When I got my Incredible 2, the Verizon store uploaded all my contact from the Eris. Then my Google account added those again, so now I have double everything. Would the best way to do this be:
1 - Turn off sync on the phone
2 - Delete all the contacts on the phone.
3 - turn on sync again on the phone and let it update from gmail contacts.

Is there a danger of the phone wiping the contacts from Google? I.E., if I delete all on the phone, will it delete from gmail also? I don't want that!

Are these duplicate contacts both google type?

If so, just log into your gmail account on your pc, go to contacts, and bulk delete the dupes..

If they are not, then on your phone hide all the google contacts, then mass delete the ones left behind. Unhide the google ones and your away!

The google side is fine, no duplicates. It looks like I can change the setting to view only Sim and phone contacts. so hide the google contacts, then delete the sim and Phone? Ok to delete the Sim? Thanks for your help, sounds easy. EEB
