Help double email notifications [resolved]

monsterz3ro

Newbie
Ok, I tried searching and all I could find were 2-year old posts for other phones, so hopefully this isn't a duplicate thread.

Just a (hopefully easy) question: I'm getting notifications (on the notification bar, or whatever its called, up top) twice when I get email. Once from "mail", once from "gmail". I'm not sure how to fix this- I prefer the "mail" interface to the "gmail" interface (attachments seem to be handled better in the "mail" interface), but don't know what to turn off/sign out of/etc. I would also like to turn off any potentially redundant power usage (if my same email account is being managed simultaneously by two clients and thus wasting battery life).

I know it is MOSTLY an issue of just getting used to it from my original EVO, but the whole setup on the 4G LTE feels a little disjointed and sloppy. I'm not nearly as in love with this phone as I thought I'd be. Plus it feels so light and cheap. I know it isn't, but. I dunno.

Anyway, can someone give me any help on how to fix the double email notifications/potentially double email clients?

Ugh. I hate this phone. So obnoxious. If I could add in two quickie questions to my first:

I'm using the swype keyboard, and I don't know why but as of this morning, it is suddenly not showing me the row of word suggestions above the keyboard as I swype words. Additionally, I typed "ondemand", to then go back and insert the hyphen (to make "on-demand") and as soon as I try to click into the word to insert said hyphen, it automatically changes it to "overhand" or "incensed". When I click the menu dots (menu icon vertical dots in the top right), it only gives me options to do things like insert smileys. The documentation I got with the phone is pretty insufficient, and I can't figure out where in the "keyboard" settings to revert these features back to how they were last night, before they apparently decided unilaterally to adjust themselves.

Please help before I throw this phone through the window. Not that it weighs enough to break the window, but still. Just in case. Any help would be appreciated enormously. I'll be reading through threads in the meantime, trying to figure it out.

Thanks ahead of time =)

Oh merged! Neat. K. Never mind on the swype questions. Just need help with the double email questions. Please and thank you.

I prefer mail to gmail also. I remember setting up mail and not having my contacts. I then had to go set up gmail in order to sync down my contacts. I know I thought it was odd, but I think it was this way on the OG Evo also. I checked and Google and Mail are both set to sync however I only get one notification when I get an email. Not sure why you might get two. I am checking my settings and not seeing anything that jumps out. I will keep checking for you though.

As for Swype I don't have an answer. I would try a phone reboot, however I would make sure Fast Boot is turned off, so it properly reboots. Goto Settings-Power to disable it.

i had the same issue on my OG EVO, i turned off sync on one of the two email apps (the one I didn't want to use) and it stopped. Cheers.

I see what happens. I get the GMAIL notice, but I use Mail. Mail is set to refresh every 30 minutes and when I launch app. Thats why I never get 2 notices. I would go into the MAIL sync and disable auto refresh and only use the "When App launches". That way you get the GMAIL notice once but can still use the MAIL app to read it. Guess thats not a "real" answer, but a decent work around.

AH! The swype thing was buried in the keyboard and input menu- resolved- but did not know about the boot thing. I will be looking into that momentarily.

I just went into my syncs and "google" had about 40 billion features, all set to sync, so that must have been wherein the issue was. Gonna have Lady Monsterz3ro email me to see if its fixed.

Thanks for the help both of you. Much obliged!

Well, I've turned off "sync gmail" under "Sync Settings > Google". I've left "sync mail" checked under "Sync Settings > Mail" (which has my gmail account). Though right now, the sync arrow is just spinning and spinning on the "sync settings > mail > sync mail" field. Soooo...maybe what I did, didn't solve it. Do I really need to have google sync so that the seperate "mail" app can sync? That seems...how do you say...dumb?

Now that I have disallowed gmail to sync under Sync > Google, the main mail app does not seem to sync. I've been watching the spinning arrows (both on the Sync > Mail screen, and in the "mail" inbox itself) for about 5 minutes now (while connected to the wifi). So...seems that disabling the gmail sync through Sync > Google is not the right approach. HTC, you're killin me. I've liked the pictures that I've taken with the camera on this thing, and disliked pretty much everything else about the phone thus far. Granted, its only been a couple of days, but man I loved the original EVO when I got it sooooo much more than I feel for this 4G LTE.

Just tried a test with only Contacts/Calendar in Google set to sync. My mail app brought over the new email right away. Circle spun for a second or two and opened. Is your email a large one with attachments?

NO FAIR. No, its just one line of text. What the crap.

Gonna leave Sync > Google > Gmail turned OFF, and Sync > Mail turned on, and try a restart...

Working now! Huzzah.

Thanks for all the help, everyone =)
