Root Downgrading from ICS

BelleVie

Lurker
Hey everyone, :)

I upgraded my htc desire to ICS and need to downgrade it to froyo. What's the simplest way to do this? I can't seem to find any tutorials to downgrade from ICS for this particular phone

Thanks!

Hi BelleVie, and welcome to AF :)

You must have flashed a custom ROM to get ICS on it (only way to get ICS on a Desire), so just flash a Gingerbread ROM instead (or Froyo if you really want). Same procedure.

Or do you mean something else, like you want to unroot?

Hi Hadron :)

Thanks so much for your reply. My boyfriend put ICS on my phone for me and I'd like to downgrade it myself (due to lagging etc) so im not 100% of the procedure. Do you know of a simple tutorial which can take me through it and flash a gingerbread rom?

Thanks!

It depends on which gingerbread ROM you want.

The sticky post "All Things Root Guide" in this forum links to the "rooting faq", which includes instructions for flashing a ROM. However, some ROMs have specific requirements, e.g. particular partitions on your SD card, and won't work without these. Chances are you have such a partition if you have an ICS ROM, but maybe not. One way to tell would be just just look at the capacity of your SD card: a "16 GB" card should have 14.9 GB usable space, and multiply/divide that as appropriate for other card sizes. If the total space (not free) is significantly less, the card has probably been partitioned. A little app called Quick System Info can show you this too - what it calls "a2sd storage" is the partition I'm referring to.

The same sticky post as a link to a list of ROMs (maintained at the XDA Developers forum). Or if you can tell us what sort of thing you are looking for we can come up with some suggestions (e.g. do you like HTC Sense or not?). There are a few other threads here about ROM choices.

The basic steps to flashing a ROM are:

* back up any apps and data you want to keep. You can use a specialist backup app, such as Titanium Backup. There are also apps for backing up messages etc (though the latest versions of Ti can do this now). Contacts can be exported to SD card, though if they are synced with Google then they are safe anyway.

You need to do this because the system data will be incompatible with a different ROM, so we will need to wipe the phone.

* Download the ROM you want as a zip file (that's how they come) and put it on your sd card (top directory is fine).

* Go into "recovery". Boot the phone up while pressing the volume down key. This will take you to a white screen with a short menu. Select "recovery".

* When in recovery, make a backup. This is a different type of backup, which will let you restore your current ROM and data should anything go wrong.

* Once you've done that, do a factory reset (again from recovery)

* Then select the "install zip from SD card" option. Select the ROM zip you put on your card earlier, and confirm you want to do this.

* Wait until it says it has installed, then select the reboot option. First boot with a new ROM may take several minutes

* Restore data/apps from your backups or the play store.

Do read the faqs and guides in that sticky post to understand what you are doing, and if at all unsure ask before proceeding. The backups, especially the one made in recovery, are the vital bit - if there's any problem they are your lifeline (things are recoverable otherwise, but your data may not be).

Good luck, and as I say, if at all unsure ask first - we prefer avoiding problems to fixing them :)
