The file needs to be renamed to bootanimation.zip and then place in your data/local folder.

I wouldn't recommend putting it there. It's much safer to put it in /data/local. That way, you keep a copy of your old one, in case you ever want to revert back.

Also, I believe you do not need superuser permission to push to /data/local, whereas you do to modify the /system partition.

Android always looks in /data/local first, and whatever boot animation in there supercedes what is in /system/media.

All of the above is true, and not only that but a bigger speed increase if you use date/local and a less time of sight of the motorola logo (unless u changed that as well)

I know, I changed the boot logo and animation but I never have to reboot. For awhile I got to see them quite a bit but now I haven't been flashing roms as much so I never reboot.
