Help Droid 3 Email (gmail) suddenly stops working

I have had the Droid 3 since it's release and have had no problems with it, until two days ago. I have my phone linked to my gmail account and thats where I get my email. A couple of days ago I got the error message that "Connection timed out, could not connect to gmail.com". I found this weird because previously it had connected just fine.

I tried restarting the phone and that didn't do any good. I have also searched the forums and I am a bit worried that there hasn't been a similar problem.

I don't know if this has anything to do with it but the incoming server has the option of "IMAP mail server" or "POP mail server". I have the IMAP mail server selected.

Any insight to what the problem may be, or tips on how to fix it would be greatly appreciated.

PS (It also seemed to delete all the messages I had previously viewed on the phone, but I assume that is because it could not retrieve them from gmail.com)

If you are talking about a Gmail account, I think that you're far better off ditching the email app and using the Gmail app instead. It's far, far better, particularly for Gmail (i.e., support for easy marking of SPAM, archiving messages, labeling messages into labels/folders, push/instant mail delivery, etc.)
