Droid Charge battery life awful

I don't have this phone. Just checking some things out for a friend. JD works fine on my phone, but there's a thread in this forum about issues with JD and Charge. People were saying they had to uninstall because it would not regain data connection when it was supposed to.

I use the default setting on the free version on Epic.

Yeah I am having the same issue. With JD turned on many times my app doesn't find the data network connectivity. Is there any fix for this?

I talked to a Rep from Best Buy and they said battery life sucks on all 4g capable smartphones. I'm getting 5 to 6 hours most days and that's on my hip with 5 to 10 emails aday, a few text msgs, wifi off, gps off. I LOVE the customization of the Android phones, but it sucks balls I have to damn near turn most of it's features off to enjoy it. Iphone 5...here I come!

Lately Ive not been streaming music constantly (8-10G a month). While I'm not actively using the phone for data I've been shutting off the mobile data. If I need it I just turn it on (only takes several seconds to acquire a signal) Ive noticed a HUGE improvement in bat life. I live in an area where 4G is still not a consistent signal. So the phone would be switching between the two.
Just my two cents.

Gr8, this is what Juice Defender does for you. It shuts data off when your screen is off, and then turns it back on for you when you turn your screen back on. You can set it up more aggressive than that, but that's the default setting, and it works pretty good on my phone (Epic).

Thanks for the explanation on JD. for me I was streaming about 18hrs a day. I did have the phone on a car charger most of the time. Just reading about those problems and didn't know if it would be worth downloading JD when I can just do it myself. Im just sayin :)

LOL most would argue, "Why do it myself when an app will do it for me?" :)

But if you are streaming, you're going to have to disable it anyway, bc you'll lose your stream as soon as your screen shuts off, unless you set up exceptions. I've never gotten into all that. I just use the default setting. So in your case, yes, it is probably simpler to do it yourself.

Yeah that's right. You really do have to pay strict attention to what signals are available. If you're not near a good wifi switch it off. If you are use it. Searching for non existent signals kills a battery fast. Also the way I understand it GPS is only switched on in case you need it. It doesn't run all the time.

The other big drain on the Charge is that big awesome display. If you look at it a lot it's going to drain your battery. That's something you're going to have to accept. If you really have to look at it a lot get the charging dock with the second battery or an extended one. I have the dock and I love it. When my phone is on it it becomes a nice desk clock with alarm, weather, news feed and it can be hooked up to a stereo and play music from it. If I need to go somewhere and my battery is low I just pop my second battery in.

i've noticed that Juice Defender makes that switch for you automatically. also, you can turn off 4G and go with CDMA (3G) by going: "Settings" -> "Wireless & Network" -> "Mobile Networks" - > "System Selection"

Also try out the app called "Screen Filter." It's free on the market. It's a small app that, when tapped, will dim you screen down to a preselected level. Mine's set to 48%. I keep Screen Filter on all the time except for when I'm outside. It really benefits the battery life with our AMOLED displays.

Also, rooting and romming has helped a ton too. I've use my phone a moderate amount today, websurfing mostly, and am down to 45% battery as of 6:25pm (unplugged at 6:30am). Being able to shut off apps and undervolt the cpu has been the key from rooting.

I also run in 3G mode most of the time. With the EP1Q modem, the websurfing speed difference from 3G to 4G is not enough to justify the extra drain 4G takes. I turn 4G on when I need it or want the extra boost in speed.

Bottom line: doing a few things to save juice adds up. Do a few things at a time and you'll have a phone that runs from morning to night on a single charge no probs.

Hope that helps!

I hear these stories of great battery life and wonder where mine is! I have tried JD, turned down my screen, turned my phone onto 3G only so its not searching, and just about everything else and my battery still drains too fast. If I unplug my phone at 6:45am it will be down to 85% within 2-2.5 hrs. with minimal use. Wifi is off, BT off, GPS off.

I've learned to live with it by:

a. charging it in the car all the time
b. charging it at work constantly while at my desk
c. carrying a spare battery

I like the phone even though its not perfect, but loathe the battery life. If I didn't have the ability to be near power and have a spare battery I don't think it would work for me.

Two words my friend...Extended Battery

85% after 2.5 hours is not too bad - see if your phone can hold its charge for a full day with those settings. I tested my phone under similar conditions and it held a charge for 24 hours. I would rather not have to charge my phone every day, but since I've only had for a week, I'm still learning how to use it, so there will be more drain on the battery. after about a month, I fully expect to charge my Charge every other day.

keep in mind that this is normal for smartphones - especially the Charge and 4G.

today, I'm turning off JD to see the effects...

My battery life was great for about 2 months...As of late its gotten terrible. 5 hours at best is what I was getting now. Did a hard reset and all that! Who knows, this is the non-typical world of Android..lol

Dude your back thought you were leaving us for the Bionic??? Just kidding, don't hurt me....please ( lol ).

Samsung did cut corners w/ the battery on the Charge for style points thus smaller battery equals thinner phone. Forget style I need power!! The regular size battery has to work so hard it felt like the phone is going to melt. The extended battery never sweats on me like the regular did.

All, I love Android and the Samsung DC and the ease of use. The battery issue is well known among 4G users. All phones, not just the DC. Simply, if you live on the fringe of a 4G tower or travel to non-4G areas, turn off 4G. I've got the extended battery and I only get 10 hours of use when I'm in a 4G area and all of the display tuning, apps disabled, etc then. Just dock or charge the phone at night and when you come in from work everyday and this is not an issue. I carry the old stock battery and phone back with me in my case when I travel to do a hot swap out.

The reality of 4G until they get all of their towers turned up.

Oh yeah, wait for the complaints for the same issue with iPhone 5.

We're carrying mini-computers around in our pockets folks, what should we expect?

Right. So no need for a widget. lol That was my point.

I beg to differ. Screen filter is not a replacement for the automatic brightness, rather, it runs alond side it. Screen filter sets the phone's max brightness. The auto brightness still works, but the screen is overall dimmer when screen filter is active.

I notice a rather large difference in drain with screen filter on.

Better yet, why don't you try it, and see for yourself. Don't like it or still aren't convinced? Remove it.

For what it's worth, my phone easily lasted 1.5 days in between charges - used juice defender and turned off WiFi/GPS/BT. even logged some heavy usage at night using WiFi, taking pics/vids, downloading apps, texting, etc. but that's not typical for me. my normal usage is about 1-2 hours per day of non-calling tasks. so I am very satisfied with my CPO charge (except for NFL Mobile not working, ugh!).

Thank you for the explanation. I may try it. I am often trying to see my screen in very bright sunlight, so I'm thinking it might be more of an inconvenience than a help, to be honest. I'm in and out all day. That's why I like the auto brightness. I never have to do anything.

I bought a Samsung Droid Charge and battery life barely last 10 hrs with Wi-Fi and GPS turned off. I have the display set at 1 minute. But I don't use the phone that much during the day. The battery usage say it is the display that has used the maximum amount of power but the brightness is set to a very minimal level. Email notifications are set to every 15 minutes. The only thing left is to turn off mobile data.
have you tried app android booster? turned my charge into a super performer

I can understand that. Neat thing about ScreenFilter is that the icon for it is the On/Off function. So just add the icon to your home screen and tap it when needed, tap it again to disable. No need for a special widget running in memory all the time. Easy peasy. :D
