Droid Charge, Droid x2, or Thunderbolt

I have read that some of the Charge lag time is due to slow memory cards that were used in some phones.

Also is it possible to re-size the RAM from 512MB to 1GB, because it does have 2GB allocated internal memory.

I didn't see a reply to this, but no, it is not possible. I wish phone manufacturers would distinguish more clearly between these two things, but RAM is memory (like the RAM in your computer), while the 2 GB of internal storage is flash storage, like the hard drive in your computer. The two are not interchangeable.

My first smartphone was the Samsung Fascinate and let me tell you, I kinda Hated it. May be harsh to say that, but I kept calling in for the 2.2 update and they said it would be here. It never came!! Lucky for me I went to get the droid 2 global. a couple days later the iphone 4 came out for verizon. Well I got the iPhone... I loved the iPhone but it was just too limited. The droid 2 g. was a great phone but the screen was too dim and the battery was horrible. SO then, just recently I got another upgrade to the Droid Charge! Let me tell you, it is an AMAZING device. I was about to get the tb cuz it seemed cool, but my bro has it and the battery is the worst. Just on standby for a lil bit it went from 85 to 63 percent. Barely any background aps. For like 2 seconds I was thinking about returning this and getting the droid x2 but then I realized how amazing this phone really is. Droid x2 has bad battery and no 4g LTE (which I get full bars all around where I live).
So really, the Droid charge is the way to go!

I went to Verizon one last time today to play with the 4g choices. I think I will pick up a Charge tomorrow from Costco.

i heard from rep that you can download google on the Charge to replace bing so it is not a big deal...

I am actually also looking to get into the smartphone market especially with the 7/7 "deadline" to get a decent data plan. With that said I want to keep my phone for a while so it SEEMS it is no brainer to go for 4G now and not cry about not having it later? BTW the area here is getting 4G end of the month so it will be put to use. Also have a couple of questions after reading some reviews:

1. is the charge doing the "cycling" thing still or is that fixed or can be fixed? I read it keeps trying to go 3g to 4g vice versa and that undoubtedly drains battery life?

2. should I go for 4G now or settle 3G? seems many here likes 4G... if I go 3g iphone 4 seems decent choice...

3. are android apps generally better than iphone4 and are there overlapping apps like messenger etc? my friends mostly use iphone4 and i dont want to be odd man out in terms of communicating via msn messengers and other things....

thanks!

Bing is on the Revolution, not the Charge, so it's really no deal at all if you get the Charge ;) But yeah, you can download the Google apps instead. You just can't remove the Bing apps without rooting.

If you only use your phone for email, light web browsing, IM, and occasional YouTube, you probably wouldn't have much use for 4G. On the other hand, if you like to stream videos and/or music, 4G will be your best bud. And of course, you're likely to end up finding new uses for 4G if you have it. Since it's coming to your area soon (and if you don't plan on moving), it's probably worth getting a 4G phone just so you can use it if you want.

Apps on Android can do a lot more than on the iPhone. For example, on Android you can replace the dialer, the contacts app, the email app, the keyboard, the homescreen launcher, and more, where you're stuck with the stock apps for all of those functions on the iPhone. Android apps can also change hardware settings like Wifi, Bluetooth, silent mode, etc, which lets you access things more easily and also set up some really neat automation if you want.

Most apps on the iPhone have an equivalent on Android, the only exception being games (and even that is turning around). As far as messaging goes, if your friends are on standard IM networks (like MSN as you mention, or AIM or Google Talk, etc), you should be fine, as Android has apps for all of these. The place where you run into compatibility issues is with platform-specific chat apps like BlackBerry Messenger, or the upcoming iMessaging for the iPhone. As long as you can convince your friends not to move to that, you should be fine.

just bought the charge today!! pretty neat little device but i can see the battery being not too friendly... Thought about rooting it but decided too risky :/

Battery not so good here but it is suppose to get better the more you use.

I've had the Charge for a month and while I've found a couple of things that I'm not happy with it is still an awesome phone. Verizon 4G LTE is everything that I expected. Ordered the extended battery - well worth it - phone lasts all day with normal use (calls, email, browsing internet, etc.).

Now for the negatives. While in speaker mode the display times out too quickly. If I'm listening to voicemail and need to make numeric selections, the screen has usually gone dark (usually within a few seconds), and I have to "wake" it up again. I've set the Display Sleep option to 10 minutes, but it didn't help.

Another annoyance is the Bluetooth support. I have a Jawbone that worked GREAT with my other phones, but is horrible with the Charge. And the reception isn't consistent. There are times when it's OK, and other times when you hear every other word. This performance isn't related to battery charge - have the problem when both Charge and Jawbone are fully charged.

In spite of these two items this is still a great phone. I haven't experienced any of the other issues (delays, etc.) that others mentioned. This is a very fast device. A colleague was doing a Google search on his computer and I did the same search on the Charge, and the Charge displayed the results faster. My buddy was jealous.
