Droid Charge....PLEASE UPDATE THIS THING!!!

I am going back to Motorola as soon as I can. this lack of an upgrade after spending $300 on this phone just isn't right. My Motorola phones received upgrades in a timely manner.

I tried to get in touch with Samsung through there contact customer service link and they don't even list the Droid (Model: SCH-I510)!

Guess they don't care about it anymore.

Well I actually got a reply, but not an answer to my question to Samsung. "I know as of right now Verizon and Samsung are bickering over the upgrade to the latest OS upgrade for the Droid Charge, but if Verizon won't corporate will you at least step up and save us from the feud and release a Samsung only upgrade?". Here is the response:

Dear William,

Thank you for your inquiry. Unfortunately, we are unable to speculate when/if this Gingerbread software revision might be available for Samsung Droid Charge due to the fact that this might lead to inaccurate information and confusion.

Should this become available, it will be posted on our website in the Samsung Download Center.

We apologize for any inconvenience this may cause.

Not that it's a 100% guarantee, but another nail in the coffin for the Droid Charge getting updated (ESPECIALLY to ICS): Samsung is working directly with Google and focusing all it's efforts on ICS. ICS is very unlikely to be ported officially because it's built to work at a 16:9/1280x768 native resolution. The Charge is something like 800x480 or something like that (cant be bothered to get the exacts atm). Theoretically, it would work, but it wouldnt make any sense to upgrade old devices when they're going all out to promote the new ones.

^THIS^ is just about word for word what they said when asked about the 2.2 update for the Fascinate.

The LG Revolution, which came out 2 weeks after the Charge, is getting Gingerbread update today.

"Where's the love, Samsung/Verizon???"

I'm done with this damn phone... And if the new galaxy wasn't a nexus, I would be done with samsung... It's ridiculous we haven't seen gb yet.

I know I'm probably doing exactly what Verizon/Samsung want, but I am jumping ship to the Gnex when it launches. I'm sick of getting treated like I don't matter when it comes to updates. First the Fascinate, now the Charge that I got as a replacement for the Fascinate due to the bug. And apparently the Continuum is still on Eclair. They also just released the Stratosphere just a couple weeks ago and it has Gingerbread on it; so where's ours?

As nice as the Razr is, the prospect of a locked bootloader is an absolute deal breaker here. Seems like no matter the direction you go, there's a trade off, whether it's Motorola and their bootloader, HTC and their poor battery life, or Samsung and their sluggish approach to updates. Thankfully, the next Nexus is coming to Verizon!

Honestly, if the RAZR gets regular updates and actually works, I dont give a rats fundamental orifice about locked bootloaders and the like. I had to play the ROM game with my windows mobile phone and I hated it. Sure, there are nice features added, but for the most part, I'd rather have something that gets regular updates and fixes (well optimally there'd be no issues to start with, lol).
I cannot recommend Samsung to anyone. Their TV's are awesome, but their customer service is HORRIBLE. Even with the TV line. I did get things resolved, but it took a lot of transfers and explaining.
I'd love to jump to the Nexus, but even still, it's a VERY hard sell because they've screwed me with this phone and a previous gen phone I had (long story short, all Samsung phones I've had are garbage).

EP4P Gingerbread Build for DROID Charge Leaked

I'll take any news I can get about this topic
Its a leak... Team Black Hat has released all the leaked GB builds thus far. Anything past EE4 has been based on their leaks. None of them have ever become an official Verizon release though. I'm skeptical as to whether this one will or not. I've had an instance of the speaker making the loud screetch/static/squeal whatever you want to call it, and it wasnt even on a phone call, it was just sitting on my desk doing nothing and WHAM. So I'm pretty sure they havent ironed out the bugs in this ROM either.

I've got a guess, but it's a VERY nasty one. Verizon is allowing these "leaked" ROMs to get people to upload them and run them. 1) removes all liability from them because it voids your warranty 2) Allows them to get a lot of testing outside the lab, just monitor the forums for all the problems people are having and determine from that whether it's viable for release.

If what is said on the Android Central boards is true it could very well be the case. Apparently VZW is taking down the display models and being told not to push the Charge anymore.

I went to a VZW store this evening and verified this. All Charges have been pulled and replaced with RAZRs. I'll be calling tomorrow to find out what's up.

Why? It's just to make room for new inventory. It's not being pulled for any other reason than that, so I'm confused on what your calling Verizon for?

Because if Verizon is pulling the phone (assuming pulling means taking it off their phones to sell list, not just the display) then there is a VERY large problem. They stuck people with phones that didnt work properly, they didnt update the phones, and then 6 months later they are taking it off the sell list.

If they're just pulling the demo units (and still offering the phone for sale), then that's a different story. I'd be interested to hear Verizon's take on this as well considering how many problems they've had with the phone.

If they are in fact pulling the phone for good, that's a massive problem on their part. There will likely be some legal issue with that, the phone isnt even out of manufacturers warranty and it's dead.

Not sure why people are worked up over this. If you like your phone keep it. If not, get something else. Seems like its more of an issue of people feeling they don't have the latest and greatest. Welcome to the tech world....

Personally I really like my charge. Especially after loading up a different ROM.

Its a matter of price/locking someone into a contract and then telling them their boned when their device doesnt work. Would you lease a car for 2 years and be satisfied that it would randomly not start, or randomly shut down for no reason? You'd take it back to the dealership every time and have them address the problem until it was either fixed or they gave you a new car. Then, if they still never fixed the problem, and they decided to drop the car line all together and stick you with a car that doesnt work... There's a big legal issue there. You may say this isnt the same, cars are way more money, whatever... But the actual fact is that the situation is no different. A warranty is a warranty and if it's not working, not fixed, and not addressed, there is a legal issue.
I could care less about faster, more processors, whatever the crap people care about. I wanted a 4G phone with acceptable battery life and a killer screen. The DC has most of that, except the part where you use it as a phone, it's original/main function.

What doesn't work on this device as a phone? I don't have phone issues....also have you had troubles with warranty or is it likely Verizon won't honor your warranty if they do pull the device?

Also, you're not leasing your phone. You own it.

Phone calls drop/wont connect or have an immense amount of cutting out on the stock ROM. Upgrading ROMs has also proved troublesome (not even taking into account the voiding of warranties and whatnot) because it introduces issues with bluetooth connection, resets (during phone calls as well), and the extremely loud static issues. Some of these are due to GB issues, while others are just problems with the phone itself (bluetooth especially).
It's a hope that this new ROM EP4P will address these issues, but it's not acceptable to require someone to fix something that should be addressed without resorting to alternate methods.
Yes, we buy and not lease a phone, however, it's a similar situation in that you're locked in for a specific time (unless you pay an unholy amount to change).
The issue with the warranty is that the device never worked to begin with, they've never addressed/fixed the issues, and they're pulling the item because they realize that it is bad. Its bad form all around. They should fix the issues, allow the person to get a working device of equal value or nullify the contract. And in that order of preference. Again, I like the features and actually there is not a single phone that Verizon offers that I want right now, so I'd much rather the issues be addressed.

That stinks you're having so many problems. For what its worth, I had a thunderbolt when they came out and it was horrendous! I called a few times and they offered me a charge for 250...I said ok and sold tb on Ebay for 270. Since then I've been quite happy. If you've flashed a new ROM before, try the new leak. From what I'm hearing it solves 99% of the issues people have with the charge.

I've never heard anyone else complain about phone calls not connecting or cutting out. If your phone is defective, check warranty coverage - you should be able to get a replacement. I don't think this has anything to do with "the stock ROM." I've always run stock and don't have any problems.

I did have a bad power button; Verizon replaced my phone without questions.

I am trying the new leak and so far it's been quite a bit better. The biggest issue I still have with it is the static in call. Someone told me about making sure the min clock cycle is at 200 and not 100, so I'm going to try that for a while and knock on wood that it fixes the problems.

I actually went to the store planning on buying the iPhone4 because I read about all the TB issues, and I cant deal with having a phone with that many problems AND a horrible battery life. To my shock, the Charge had just been released that day and I was told it was the end all be all of awesomeness, etc. lol

I was having issues with the phone getting a signal, and data connection, after 4 days I traded it in for another one and had the same problems. After calling tech support they said to hold out for an update because they dont have enough information to go off yet.

Needless to say, the updates didnt fix anything. So I was stuck ROMing my phone. ROMing it completely resolved the phone connection issues and 90% resolved my data connection issues. (on the Froyo build, GummyCharge) The problem with Gummy was the hot boots, some issues playing nicely with my exchange server at work, extreme lag and it seems like there was something else... Hrmm, too many ROMS to remember at this point, lol.

Verizon has offered to give me a refurbished phone, but I've had NIGHTMARES with every refurb device they've ever given me. Typically I'd be like whatever, just do it. But The 4 phones I've had that they refurb, I've had to get them to send me a new phone at least 13 different times. Some were DOA, some had non-working buttons, others have had blown speakers, screens started separating from themselves (manufacturers known defect), keyboards not working, and the list can go on. The very basic part is that I do not want someone else's problem phone that Verizon just simply re-boxed and sent me. Their QC is not up to par when it comes to refurb devices. It's a case of the devil you know vs the devil you dont. :S I'd rather be stuck with my phone that I know is bad than play the refurb game and have to re-setup my phone every week because they cant send me a phone that works. I dont find that to be unreasonable, the long history of issues with refurbs should be more than sufficient proof to Verizon that I've been more than friendly up to this point. The whole reason I bought this phone is because I was not going to go through one more refurb piece of junk, so I dropped big $ on this thing hoping that I wouldnt have to go through that hell anymore.
