Root Droid eris

i have a droid eris the version is currently at 2.1 is it still possible to root? if so can someone point me in the direction on how to do it, like a step by step tut or something.

Yes you can root.

Those will take you a long way in your quest for root knowledge.

I'm kinda new to this, how would i install this apk? Do i drop it on the root file of my sd card then shut my phone off and press the vol down and power at the same time? also i dont have amon recovery, is that in the file i have to d/l?
 
well im kinda new to this so i thought that i had to do recovery boot. But i guess i was more easier then what i thought because i got it done. Thanks for your help everyone

Just boot into Recovery Mode once you're rooted and choose Flash zip from sdcard. Be sure the zip file of the rom you want is in the main directory of you sdcard and not in a subfolder or else it will not show up.

So just put the zip file on the root of my sdcard then boot in to recovery and flash? does it have to be a special name for the file?

You don't have to change the file name; just use the name that the developer called it.

Before you flash, go into the Wipe menu and choose the first option - Wipe data/factory reset - unless you have an updated ROM from a developer who says that you can flash over the older version. If you are switching from one ROM to another, always remember to wipe data before you flash.

Also, read the developer's instructions carefully. Some ROMs require you to flash another .zip file after you flash the main .zip (for example, to add the Google apps.) It's probably better to start with a simpler ROM (like PlainJane T2) that you can flash in a single step before you move on to one that it more complex to get running.
 
Ok one more nub question then ill let this die.... What is the purpose of roms? to increase cpu speed/power, less battery use etc ? or to have more access to apps or whatever?

a custom rom is a developers ideal version of how they think the phone should run. you will find much better performance, battery life and reliability. really is no comparison to the stock HTC rom.

you will need to try a few and get a feel for which roms work best for your situation. These days I prefer the froyo roms. I run Cyangoen Tazz 2.0 which is fast, stable and looks cool.

a good 2.1 rom that is stable, fast and easy to work with is XTR-Sense or XTR-Rom. if your feeling a little wild, check out some of the froyo roms.

do not rename the file and whatever you do, do not open the zip file. Just leave it zipped and transfer it over to the sd card.
