Safe to assume we will have 100 new threads asking if the update should be refused IRT the near future ability to root the phone?

Cool!

What? They aren't gonna patch out the attack vector mid update....

Though I suppose anyone making a thread like that wouldn't know that.

WAY AWESOME!  :D :D A month and two days after release... not bad!

Sorry, I had a bit of a nerdgasm there, I need to go change my tighty whities... I'll be watching developments on this front with great interest.

After you guys root, let us know if you can still see "paid apps" in the Market.

Are you kidding me? This only gives you SU access through the ADB console.

It's a START, it's not technically rooting to the avail that you can have a shell, upload new roms, etc :D

Now here's a real question.... I'd rather not play with my droid attached to eclipse yet to use the adb console.

Is there a way to copy the files to the "sd card" image emulator? It's probably simple, I just haven't figured it out yet.

This may be a stupid question but will the coming update break the root? Or does this update.zip bring us to the latest version?

Its just a request...I heard it "may" be an issue "going forward".

I have no idea what's involved with "rooting", as I'm sure is the case with many people who want to, and will try, nor do I have any desire to. Just worried about access with "unbranded" Milestone as the Market "may" view them similarly.

p.s. - n900 by week's end! O.B.O.Y.!

ok few questions..

how do you use this root?
whats the benefit as of now in using this root?
will this root be affected by the upcoming update?

I can see all the threads now, "Hey guys, just rooted my phone and I've never done it before...can you all fix all the problems I now have? Tnx!"

:)

Just an FYI - if you want the benefits of the 2.01 update now, don't install the root, the 2.01 (and any future official updates) won't be offered to your phone. You'll need to get 2.01 (and all future updates, of course) via a custom ROMs.

I'm going to hold off until a custom ROM based on the 2.1 update in January is available...I'm not in any particular rush on this, but look forward to seeing what the early adopters get into. :)

I really hope you were joking, I didn't see any smilies!

Install it.

Connect it in debug mode to your computer.

Run ADB commands against the phone.

It's not a "consumer root", it's a way to get root "access" through ADB into the phone. Since I don't have another smartphone, I'm choosing not to try this "just in case". If I can get it on the emulator, I can verify, but that's about as far as I'll go.\

Basically it's a start, the first key of holy keys to get the next milestones.

I rooted, but can't do anything.

Market root apps don't work yet.

LOL, really?

Not joking - that info is covered in the thread linked to from this one.

LOL, really?

Sounds like a partial root. adb root only. Exactly what can you do with adb acess anyways?

Well you can use adb as a shell to su (sudo) to run shell commands. You do have 10+ years of *nix experience, right?
