Help Droid is dialing from my touch while on a call

This was a hard one to title. When I am talking on the Droid (every time so far) I have touched the 744 on the dial pad apparently with my ear which sends the phone into mute I guess b/c I can hear the other person, but they can no longer hear me. I then look at the dial pad, it shows 744 then fades out and I can't do anything more- the call is then lost. I am not even trying at this point to hold between my ear and shoulder, this is just my hand on the phone with it up to my ear. As you can imagine, this is quite frustrating.

I think part of the issue may be that my screen is far too sensitive. I am finding it very difficult to scroll on a web page for example, without selecting a link. How do I fix that? I haven't been able to figure it out yet.

Then I am thinking there must be an app for the dial pad thing? My Storm had one that locked the screen when I was on a call. Hopefully it's an easy fix!?

There is a sensor to the left of the Motorola logo that is supposed to disable the screen when you're on a call. You can make a test call and test that sensor. While on a call just put your thumb over that area and you should see the screen go black. Lift your thumb and the screen should reappear and be active. If it doesn't work this way, you have a defective sensor ... take it back to the happy Verizon people.

I tested the sensor like you said. It does seem to be working, at least when tested, but I don't think it is ACTUALLY working, because my ear is definitely pushing something. Though the more I think about it, I think I am pushing the (what do you call them?) soft keys? at the bottom. They vibrate so right before I lose a call it always vibrates, then I am pushing the 744 numbers. So, is there a way to make the soft keys lock too?
 
Very strange indeed. If you are somehow activating the keys at the bottom with your ear (?!?) you must be holding the phone at an odd angle. Try holding just the earpiece to your ear and not pushing the screen up to your cheek. The microphone will be further away, but still plenty close for people to hear you well. This will also save you a little screen cleaning time.
 
Well, I'm not activating the soft keys with my ear, just the dial pad keys with my ear. I know I am confusing- it's confusing me too. I *think* what is happening is that I first touch one of the soft keys at the bottom with some part of my face or chin or whatever and that turns the dial pad back on and then I touch the numbers on the dial pad with my ear. Does that make more sense?

No matter what, I am in trouble b/c I can not talk on the phone. I had one 20 min conversation yesterday where I lost my friend 3 times and eventually called her back on my land line. Not cool.
 
Same thing happens to me once in a while, my cheek might brush the screen if I'm holding the phone to my ear at a particular angle and it will initiate a dialpad button press.
 
Anyone know anything about how to fix this? I absolutely can not talk on mine. It is now doing it absolutely every time even though now I have started concentrating on making sure the sensor is covered. The soft keys are apparently not part of the lock up with the sensor. Do I need to send this thing back and replace it, or is this something I could expect from all Droids? It's useless for talking as of now. I have resorted to using a landline when one is near or texting.
 
This is a common problem for some Droid users. The screen is sometimes turning on when the phone it up to your ear, though the screen should be off. Or, the screen is off but still accepting key presses. Either way, you will end up pressing buttons or, worse, muting the call because the "Add Call" button was pressed.

I've returned my Droid for a new one, but it still has the problem. Maybe the Android 2.1 software (coming 1/22/10) will fix the problem.

For best results, return your phone for a refund (within 30 days of purchase) and go back to your old one. Tell the store why you're doing this. You could repurchase it in February when the new software is out. Or buy the "Google Nexus One" which will be released in the Spring.
 
I just left the Verizon store. We took the battery out to reboot and I have since had two calls without the problem. I could still feel my soft keys vibrating but it didn't cause the phone to mute.

Thanks for the link firefox31. I read the entire thread and it definitely didn't seem as though there was any other fix.
 
Spoke too soon. After battery reboot I had several successful calls but the problem started again today. Will be initiating return tomorrow. :(
 
My wife has a Sprint Moment Android with the same issue. We too took the phone back, just to keep having this issue. Have a bootleg version of 2.1 and still the problem occurs, just as you describe.

My thought is that somehow the dial pad is opening (perhaps before the sensor locks the phone), and then the face on the dial pad is causing the problems.

If anyone has any suggestions, or similar experiences, please reply. Yes, we need to get GOOGLE's attention since it appears to be an Andriod issue given it happens on both the Droid (Motorola) and Moment (Samsung).
 
one thing ya might try on your droid is pressing the power/lock button before putting it against your ear. that would lock all button functions till pressed again and unlocked. just a thought...
 
Download screen suite. They have a free trial. When the trial is over, it costs 2.99 I think. I have been using it for months and have not lost a single call! It was a life saver!!
