Root Droid Root to fix WIFI?

I am tired of waiting for Motorola or Verizon to fix the WIFI problem when attempting to connect to corporate networks, non Broadcast SSID, with WPA-PSK/WEP security (I think this is what it had, I am at home now). This worked fine before 2.2 but ever since it has not worked. I have no control over the network and I doubt they would change things just so I can connect with my Droid. There are literally hundreds of pages on this on the Motorola site but they seem to have forgotten about us.

Anyway, I have heard this can be fixed by rooting. Can anyone confirm this and let me know what ROM, if any, I need to load? I am happy to keep it as stock as possible, just with the wifi fixed. Or Is there a fix by just rooting and keeping the stock ROM?

I know I need to do a lot of reading but looking for a general direction to fix this specific problem.

TIA,
