Droid Tethering Warning

When I bought my Droid the first question I asked the guy in the store was if it could be tethered. His response was something close to this, "Technically no it can't but if you just do a search on the market for 'Tethering' there are apps for it."

Tethering is very important to me because I spend a lot of time working away from my home/office and needed a net connection to record stuff.

Got a real kick out of the comment 'internet for free'. My wife would love to know we aren't paying $80 a month for this phone....

Thats the problem, Tethering should only be used where you away from home and need a quick internet connection to search for something or use as internet on the go. Idiots are dropping their home DSL/CABLE and switching to full tethering. This not only slow our network, but allows Verizon to think twice about letting us use the unlimited data plan. Sooner or later Verizon will catch up and impliment something like AT&T. I give it about 1-6 months after Froyo release for andriod that Verizon start charging us.

I ask we stop the 1-4GB torrent downloads, full tethering internet at home for gaming consoles and crap that uses so much freaking data.

The occasional youtube tethering at the hotel or park is ok but come one, 6 GB movie torrent file. Get a fast connection at home to do this.

Lets save Unlimited Data.

Well I have to call bull shit. First let me say I am not rooted and don't tether. I got the Droid on launch and at least then the Internet contract stated that the Internet connection any Verizon smart phone has can only be used for basic web browsing(google, slashdot, news) and e-mail. All other uses including video stream(youtube), music(pandora), and anything else(ssh) are prohibited. So unless your only doing basic web browsing and e-mail your breaking your contract as it. I doubt Verizon will be going after users any more then a threatening letter any time soon. Doing more opens the way for law suits which are very risky. As I said before advertised features such as streaming video and music are against their contract going only after tethered users is being selected, the court system does not like that. Also remember the way they advertise their plan(unlimited Internet access), if I use it as I want even if their contract says I can't the courts can view this as misleading the consumer which would cost them tons of money.

then why do they load you tube app on the droid phone? why do they offer [andora app snd other streaming radio apps in their market? if it violates it data useage they wouldnt have it in the market. I have been streaming radio at work 6 hours (how long my battery lasts) monday through friday. after over 3 months doing this never got a call or l.etter to stop.

Jesus are all of the new posts resurecting 9 month old threads? PDA net is the shit though, although a mobile hotspot does beat it. Nothing like browsing the net while in the middle of the desert =D

So i don't know if anyone else saw but P3droid posted on twitter to stop using unauthorized tether. I know he was referring to the thunderbolt but i am not entirely sure if that was directed at us as well. Any thoughts?

"Information is really firming up: Detecting root is not an (attack) on rooted users, but will be used against those who tether w/o a plan"

"Focus is on - unpaid tethering of all kinds - and it is multi-network. Im concerned with those using TBH Hack, b/c that was our doing"

"If you have used the Hotspot hack, IT IS IMPORTANT THAT YOU UNDO THAT HACK IMMEDIATELY. Sorry no further info, but do it "

"For those worried, just don't tether w/o a plan No matter what build you are on. Things are moving faster than I thought."

The last thing we need to complain about is people actually searching for a change for threads relevant to what they're posting about. There's nothing that says that a discussion in an old thread cannot be continued.

+1 on this

Yeah, I saw all of this going on. And if he says it's multi-network, it has to be relevant to the Droid as well.

I can't see how they POSSIBLY can figure out who is using unauthorized tethering, but it is a little unsettling, especially because recently, AT&T iPhone users have been supposedly getting warnings if they started tethering without a plan.

Yeah i saw a whole bunch of post from people saying that got text messages. The thing that kinda has me a little worried is P3droid said they Verizon is not going to be as nice with the whole thing. My wife needs internet from her phone for her job. Since we live in the middle of nowhere, we get nothing else for internet.

Our phone bill is already $240 a month so buying a new phone that allows for the extra data plan is a little out of the question. I may be breaking down and buying a palm pre for her so she can tether and not get charged extra for it....

not very happy about that one...
