Droid Tethering

I have the first droid on verizon, and when i go into the wireless and networks on my droid, there it a tethering option...

if i use this without getting easy tether (or equivalent app), will it cost me or is it free?

Verizon charges $20/mnth for the native tethering. You can use the paid versions of Easy Tether or PdaNet to get around this. The free versions don't allow https access. VPN seems to be an issue when tethering a stock non rooted Droid.
