Root Droid will not come up

My Droid Incredible starts to come up with the power button, but just keeps cycling between beginning screen and red "Hal" looking icon and it says "Droid" at approximately I minute intervals. Unable to get it to progress beyond this point. It has been charged, battery removed, etc. Any ideas?

Sounds like you're caught in a boot loop. Are you rooted? Try booting into recovery (volume down and power buttons for like 5 seconds) and try factory resetting it. Or try plugging into a PC while booting up...might just be a glitch...

I completed the factory reset, and it is booting up now. Thank you for the replies.

Anyone know where to download software that allows a PC to communicate with the HTC Droid Incredible? Also, I would like to download an unlocked version of the operating system.

I can't get it to progress past the point where the phone starts dialing "Verizon" because it now thinks it is an unregistered new phone again, and the only option I can access is to call Verizon. I want to load an operating system that I can register and use this phone with another provider besides Verizon. Thank you.

I used HTC's site, HTCdev - Unlock Bootloader to unlock the bootloader.

I've completed every step except # 11. When I select "Recovery", the phone reboots and it does not give me the option of selecting anything and comes up with a red triangle with an exclamation point. Step # 11 says, "On the recovery menu, select Apply sdcard:update.zip and confirm that you want to flash the update."

Is the red triangle a subliminal Verizon message to immediately crush the phone into very tiny pieces?
? :)

Rooting your HTC Droid Incredible with unrevoked3

  1. If you’re on Windows, make sure that you uninstall HTC Sync or any other program that might talk to the phone over USB (such as DoubleTwist, etc.) as these will cause problems.
  2. Connect your HTC Droid Incredible to your computer via USB cable.
  3. Drag the notification bar down on your HTC Droid Incredible.
  4. Select “Charge Only” and select “Remember This.”
  5. Run the unrevoked3 program (usually called reflash or reflash.exe) on your computer. (You may need to extract the executable file first, depending on what OS you’re using on your computer.)
  6. The tool will run its process and provide you with instructions. Follow the instructions.
  7. Copy update.zip to the /sdcard directory on your phone.
  8. Remove the phone’s battery.
  9. While holding down the Volume Down key on your phone, reinsert the battery.
  10. Use the Volume keys to highlight “RECOVERY” on the menu. Press the Power button to select it. Your phone will go into recovery mode.
  11. On the recovery menu, select Apply sdcard:update.zip and confirm that you want to flash the update.

this will not work. htc unlocking and using unrevoked are two entirely different thing.

if you are unlocked then all you will need to do is install a custom recovery.

i'm gonna move this to the incredible root forum.

Just call the activation number and let it fail.... It will let you past the screen.

I followed this website.

I did not write the instructions, but I did get everything to work except step 11. When I reboot the phone, it does not give me any options to, "select Apply sdcard:update.zip and confirm that you want to flash the update."

Any ideas or web sites that I could download a custom recovery? Sorry, I'm new to this procedure. Any help appreciated. This has to be the biggest piece of $hit phone I've ever had.

ok from what i know is that if you are current with ota's on the phone then unrevoked will not work. that is what the guide you linked to uses to gain root.

the guide i linked is what you want. now if your phone is still on froyo rather then gingerbread then unrevoked should have worked.

curious though did you get an error when running unrevoked?

Do you get a screen with a triangle and exclamation point inside?

The only way to root your phone, if it was running 2.3.4 , would be to follow the links ocnbrze posted.

If you still can't get past the activation screen, you may have to let the activation fail a couple times.

not much more to add. glad your bootloop issue was easily remedied so you can concentrate on rooting :D

did you get a "failed: is your firmware too new?" message when running unrevoked? if not, is superuser in your app drawer?

at any rate, sounds like what your seeing is the stock recovery, wich will not work to flash anything but an official,"signed by htc" package. if unrevoked did install superuser,it did not install the recovery.

your android version and software build number in settings/about phone will help us figure out what is going on :)

The screen with a triangle and exclamation point inside always comes up.

I got everything to work except the Stock rooted ota 4.08.605.19 710RD rom (odexed) at http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?p=37808455#post37808455.

I loaded a rom from a different site that seems to be working.

Thanks to everyone for all the help and the very detailed step-by-step instructions from this site at http://androidforums.com/incredible...ot-unlock-downgrade-achieve-s-off-htcdev.html, and http://androidforums.com/incredible...-root-guides-threads-updated-3-26-2012-a.html.
