Help Droid won't wake up!?

My Droid seems to be in some sort of coma. It doesnt turn on when I use the power button, but when I plug it into a charger I can power it on but all there is is a backlit black screen. Anyone have any suggestions? Maybe a problem with the battery?

your battery has shorted. please purchase a new battery
