Droid X actually self-destructs?

Actually I see lemmings already.

This doesn't apply to the majority of people, and if you didn't know it was there, it wouldn't change your decision.

Again, how many of you are compiling the source code from scratch, and then loading 100% of that onto an android phone. I'll bet nobody in this thread has even attempted the compile (on other released source code for specific handsets), yet :D:D:D:D:D:D:D:D

QFT.

This is exactly what made Android a serious competitor to Apple in the first place - it wasn't locked.

If a phone running Android is going to be locked as tight as an Iphone, I may as well get the Iphone and the "coolness" of owning an Apple product.

No, thats not what made it a serious competitor. Its a good OS and the OS is on more good phones now. Thats what made it a serious competitor. U can take a great OS and throw it on some terrible, shoddy phones and the OS wont mean jack.

All the high end Android phones are good phones. If Android was only on lower end phones no one would even mention them and Apple in the same sentence.

I'm all for rooting, I run a custom ROM now. But that is not what attracted me to Android phones. What got my eye was:

The screen
Free GPS
Tons of free apps

I try to stay outta of the open vs. closed debates going on right now cuz I can see good points from both sides. And its hard for me to get involved in these debates.

Most likely noone. But atleast with my Droid I know I can at any time if the mood strikes. I have that freedom. The only thing that would be stopping me is me. Not a "Steve Jobs" telling me no.

I haven't compiled anything since BASIC and COBOL.

I will still be getting the Droid X for just the OTB features.

I went since the day of launch from the Droid Original to just about 2-3 months ago NOT knowing what Rooting was, or that it even existed, and I was honestly STILL blown away by how great of a phone it was, and still is.

Sure not being able to root the DX will suck tremendous balls, but hey, Majority of people who are buying the phone aren't 'tinkerers'.

And you have GOT to look at it from a business standpoint, if we are able to root our phones, and make them outlast their 'predetermined by the manufacturer phone renewal date' you are taking quite a bit of money out of their pockets by not upgrading to the latest and greatest.

All it ever is, is business.

It's shocking to see how much corporate sympathy exists on these forums.

This is planned obsolescence at its worst. The consequences of this business practice are far reaching and affect more than just economics.

If Motorola doesn't get a black eye from this, it may become a standard in this industry.

Not really corporate sympathy, but corporate understanding.

They might loose a FEW sales now on the phone(minimal to almost nothing), but in the end, Motorola didn't screw over the vast majority of people who have been shock and awed by this Moto beast, further driving them to stay with the next best Moto Phone.

It didnt hurt the gaming industry. Everyone who had a hacked PS2 didnt bail on the PS3.

And the 360 being hackable since day one and still is to this day didnt sky rocket sales for it.

The 360 uses eFuses too...its still hackable.

I dont think its really coporate sympthy, its more looking at it with an open mind. Stepping back and looking at it from a wider angle than our own.
