Droid X / Android Complaints

ChiDroidX

Lurker
Just wanted to bullet a few complaints, maybe some of you have fixed these issues some way or another. (I have a Droid X)

- Side camera button? Useless. It takes until the next calendar year for the damn camera to open! And the camera, supposedly with that 1/1000 shutter speed? Yeah, not. If I breathe while taking a picture the image is blurred. iPhone 4 camera is worlds better as far as operation.

- Text messages: if I have too many open, the phone lags horribly when I try to open my texts or scroll through them. Understandable, but I assumed a phone with a 1GHz CPU would not lag that much.

- Opening the Gallery also is pretty slow, very disappointing.

- Once you press call to make a call, you could get a short nap in before the phone actually makes the call.

So mainly, my complaints are with the performance of the device. It's much less "snappy" than the iPhone 4, and that's hugely disappointing.

Maybe the root and overclock will solve many of my problems?

There are a few more I know, but I'll have to wait until I run into them again.

- Yes the side camera button is slow but for a reason - accidental presses.
- I've never had problems with the camera speed or blurriness unless I'm shaking a lot or in low light conditions. Check your cameras preferences.
- That short nap is your phone connecting to the network and creating a connection. The iPhone has this short "nap" as well.
- As for text messaging, the default messenging app sucks. Try gosms or handcent - both are good performers. I have gosms on my dx and it works like a charm.

Also remember that the iPhone 4 has a 5mp camera with flash while the dx has 8mp with dual led flash.

had the same prob with my camera. i use the little icon on the screen and it seems to help. i also have discovered that using a flashlight app helps with dark shots as the damn light is on the whole time....its like they timed the camera to go off about the time the flash has already gone off.

text shouldnt cause lag....not sure whats up there.

id root and throw on a custom rom. fission, liberty, apex

uninstall any extra useless crap and oc a little.

or buy an iphone if thats what you want; free country.

personally i cant stand the locked down form of at and t or iphone
(at and t doesn allow side loading to apps; making it harder to root)

I am rooted and have run Liberty and now Apex 1.4.x and I still see lag. You're not going to get away from it for some reason. I see lag moving between apps, opening just about anything. So, being rooted and running custom rom may help over stock, it is surely not going to be blazing fast.

I just picked up the X last week and the main complaint I've read about is random reboots. I've had 3 so far. Glad to see that this is not on your complaint list.

opening the gallery can take a long time until your phone has created all the thumbnails for your photos. If that isn't the case, maybe try another sd card.

I'm not sure what you mean by having too many open as you can only view on conversation at a time. I actually prefer the stock sms app over all the others.

You can actually change the time it takes from when you hit send to initiate a call to when it connects to the network with builp.prop edits by beasley once you are rooted. By default all phones come like this.

Something quite a few people forget about the physical camera button is that its a two stage button. depressing it untill its flush with the body of the phone focuses the camera. pressing down further actually takes the shot. Its a phone, so people carry them around in holsters, purses, and pockets. You have to allow for accidental presses or you will kill the battery. Thats why you have the delay in opening the app. Putting a shortcut to the camera on the homescreen is a much better and quicker solution.

as far as how long it takes to actually capture a picture, that all depends on your scene settings. Auto takes a long time, as it has to auto focus itself, setting the phone to the correct scene settings before you take a picture will decrease this time. Setting it to sport or steady shot will take a faster picture.

Camera is fine, the button delay is there as noted to prevent accidental pushing. If you have the camera set on auto and it is dark you will never get 1/1000 shutter speed. You have to understand how cameras work, and they don't work that way.

Clear your old texts, blur does give you those goofy ballons that take up way to much space.

The call delay is for those who use the phone w/o bluetooth or speaker very much. It gives you time to look at the phone, dial and then put it to yoru ear. If you root Jrummy has an app that can change that delay to as short as you want it but it was set up for the average user

If you want your phone more "snappy" try launcher pro. It takes out all the jumpyness and by adjusting the screen withdraw speed along with disabling the animations in the "settings" you can make it very snappy.

In short, it aint an iphone, incredible, OG droid or whatever. Its a DX and you just have to learn how to set it up for your tastes.

I might consider getting a better android device. Maybe the thunderbolt, when it finally comes out.

Sorry to see you are having problems, seems some do and some don't.

It takes two seconds for my side camera button to open the camera, doesn't seem long to me. My phone is rooted though.

I think you may be thinking the snapping sound is the shutter, it's not, it's just that, a sound. Of course there is no way for me to measure shutter speed, so I can't tell what the speed is, just have to go with what Motorola says.

I haven't had a whole lot of text open at once so I'm not sure how that will work out, seems you found a fix with text apps besides the stock one.

My gallery opens in less than 2 seconds.

The call connection time is long, that is a problem with iPhone too though.

Rooting my phone did speed it up a pretty good bit, and it allows me to personalize it more.

3 over a couple days isn't bad. One of my replacements was doing it like 3 every 10 mins.

But seriously folks, I seem to come across two types of responses when I see mention of random reboots. There are some who say "this is not normal, you have a defective device" and those who seem to be resigned to living with the reboots.

I removed Zeam and a few other apps a few days ago and so far, no more reboots. Are there people who don't get any reboots or is rebooting just a part of the Droid X experience?

I think you and I rooted around the same time. Mine has gone great and mine has gone really well, much faster and I have more control over my phone.

That's been a problem with any phone, not sure why it's so sporadic. My Droid X has been great. I've had it since Mid December and I've had maybe 5 reboots. I tried two Samsung Captivate when I was with AT&T and they were terrible. I had random reboots, they could hardly play a video. The screens did look great though. Those problems and a free Droid X pulled me to Verizon, turned out great for me.

I don't think any are good, but that's just me. You shouldn't expect them at all, but it's a random problem with all smartphones right now.

i had gotten one random reboot over two months.. then 3 in one day, think i was a CM7 nightly issue to be fair
so its hardly a normal problem

You might check to see if you have a corrupted file on your sd card. Or possibly try an unmount / remount. When a file is corrupt, phone performance can get a bit wonky.

Reboots are not normal just like blue screens in Windows are not normal.

There is an issue where certain apps can cause the phone to reboot if they are installed on the SD card when you plug it into a PC and set it to mass storage mode. If you have one of these, just have the app use phone internal memory instead.

Poorly coded apps can just cause the phone to reboot. Either during foreground use or background use. This is the most common cause of rebooting. There is no minimum quality bar for apps in the Android Market. Downloading every random thing you see from the Android Market is not a wise thing to do. People need to be responsible and pay attention to what they are installing and how it effects their phone.

If the phone is rebooting and the user is certain apps are not the problem, they just have a defective phone and should get it replaced.(This is extremely rare however, the vast majority of people have user caused software issues)

Rooting and installing any of the top Custom Roms does WORLDS for this phone.. Snappier, some say better battery life. Less lag all across the board. and most custom ROMS have a different messaging app installed as default.. I use Chomp myself.

I downloaded EasyShare & LOVED the concept & the app sharing feature. However, I quickly realized that whenever I went to share a contact, the wrong contact was showing up in the email/SMS message. I contacted the developer & he/she said that this was a known issue that had to do w/ contacts not being synced w/ Gmail. Is there a way to force all contacts (synced from Facebook and/or Exchange) to sync with Gmail? Or is there another workaround for this?
