Accessories Droid X Car Mount rant

Car Mount for DROID by Motorola - Overview - Motorola, Inc. USA

Notice it says with rapid charger. If you bought it from Moto you got the charger. If you bought it from Verizon you got screwed.

Either way the droid "dock" wasn't a dock but a holder. The X dock works great. It better charge while you are using navigation software. GPS eats up battery. Combine that with cpu for routing/drawing and possibly bluetooth depending on your setup.

I believe I read somewhere that the original Droid mounts did not have the charger but later (and now) they do have them included. It's possible that later the Droid X dock will also have chargers with them, but for now they want the cash.

I have this mount as well and it does bounce... slightly... but nothing that im too worried about and does not move enough (if any) when I am touching the screen.

If I have problems, Ill just glue the base to the arm and be done with it.

I would avoid gluing it in. Then you would lose the ability for a passenger to just take the whole shebang down for ease of use. Then put it back up there once it is set.

Mine was also wobbly. Actually I have 2, one sort of OK, one really bad. Exchanged the really bad one for one that was somewhat better in terms of fitting more tightly. (Yes, I did do all of the wingnuts appropriately). And yes, I did use the top lever mechanism. I think these just vary in build quality substantially.

Another key problem here is with the bluetooth connection. When connected to a bluetooth car speakerphone, and you go over a bump, the car transitions from bluetooth back to built in speaker. This is just plain ridiculous.... Going to start thinking about a different mount.. Is anyone else using the car mount with a bluetooth connection and seeing this?

To everyone saying "i made it up"
The original Motorola Droid Car Mount comes with A CAR CHARGER.

also just to clarify, the entire holder that the Droid X sits in wobbles, NOT the phone itself. Its the entire second/top peice that you literally "plug" your D.X into. The way that that peice attaches to the part that is mounted onto your dash is loose and wobbles a lot in my car. Especially on bumpy roads. That aspect is not adjustable at all. You can tighten the arm, and you can swivel the little "nut" left or right, but you can't "tighten" the attachment to the arm itself. It just "hangs" there.

Then take a small piece of electrical tape or a piece of fuzzy valcro and wrap it around one of the posts. It'll tighten it right up.

Can you guys post pics of these car mounts please?

Edit:
Looks like the mount does have some play, I found this vid on youtube

The video nails what im on about. i wanted to make a video but haven't gotten around to it. After using it for a week its not that bad but I still would have preferred a mount just like the droid one,...

I would be way too nervous to put my phone on a mount like that. Ive wrecked my MTB bad enough and my phone would have exploded into oblivion!

Ill be looking for a mount like that after I get my new motorcycle though

And we'll be watching you on your motorcycle not paying attention. Keep it in your jacket, and focus on the road. /me long time rider of the offensive riding of fast sportbikes.

Turn by turn is kinda hard from a jacket pocket. I know what you mean though. I know better than to try and talk/type/text while riding. And for anything other than long highway trips I am generally opposed to wearing headphones to listen to music. Too many important, noisy things happen around the city.

Got rid of my last sportbike in college, looking into either a triumph thunderbird new, or a used HD softail rocker.

Couldn't find anybody post about the same problem i am having with this. When my phone is in the dock and on the charger at the same time the touch screen will not work. The hard buttons work though.

You guys might want to take a look at the Mega Grip mount from Arkon. Here's the website:

Arkon Mega Grip Smartphone Mount for Motorola Droid X, Droid, and Devour

You can pop this on your windshield, dash, console, vent, whatever and plug a car micro usb charger. It's way cheaper than the official dock and you can use it with different phones. I've used the windshield suction one and it's solid, no wobble, but I prefer the vent mount (out of the way and no tickets). They got a bike mount also, since I've seen a few posts mention it.

For those that have the Arkon mount, when its attached to the gooseneck suction cup thing(sorry for lack of technical terms), does it swivel to a horizontal position? I am referring specifically to this setup:
Arkon Universal Windshield Car Mount Holder for PDA (CM926) - Motorola DROID X Car Mounts & Auto Accessories
That's a deal breaker for me because i'd like it to be horizontal instead of the default upright position

I never got to test mine. The disk for the dash mount was too big and it wouldn't stick in the 107 degree heat. Well it stuck but it wouldn't stay stuck.

Ever try to buy just the disk or the sticky tape? Big PITA. I had a Garmin and I had to pry that disk off....before I got the DX. After many auto part stores later I ordered the Garmin disk from Amazon for a couple of bucks.

As soon as I get it I will try the car dock & let you know if it wobbles. Just thought I would pass on that the Garmin disk/sticky tape really worked in case anyone else has a problem.

I like the dock. It does move a tad but I don't see it being a problem unless you're off-roading or doing stunt jumps over multiple buses.

Be careful with that monoprice part. I actually just clicked on the link and they added a disclaimer at the bottom that its not compatible with iPad/iPhone/Droid/EVO. Max rating doesn't mean RMS (continuous). In all my previous experiences with regular clamshell phones and even my iPod Touch, I used to buy those cheap accessory packages off eBay ($20 bundles with everything but the kitchen sink), but in this case you need to shop around to find the one which actually going to work with DX, supply enough current to charge it up and run GPS, and also a trusted name where a surge will not damage your device. Read this thread, http://androidforums.com/accessories-droid-x/139794-custom-tetrax-garmin-car-mount.html toward the bottom where we discussed car chargers. You might have to splurge between $5-$15 to get a good one. I know a lot of people had success with 1A chargers from trusted brand names, but I'm personally going with iPad 2A charger (Griffin). Higher current rating means ONLY that your converter can source up to 2A if device requires it. Charging DX up fast while using Blue-tooth, GPS, and having screen on can drain current at faster rate than your smaller capacity charger can supply.

the problem with that mount above is that squeeze way it mounts, I have one like this and its a pain in the ass, with the moto dock you just pop the phone in and flip the lever.

Yeah, the holder connects to the mount by ball/socket, so you can rotate it to landscape really easily.

I'm not sure what mount you have, but I have the Mega Grip and it's really easy to use. Squeeze the arms to hold the phone, push the button to release. Easy as pie. Maybe yours is from a different company that's not as quality.

Cool. Thanks for replying. I'm assuming when you rotate it to landscape that it will stay in that position unless you manually switch it(for example, if you take a sharp turn, the mount doesn't spin around on its own).

Ordered that last night from Amazon for $14 and some change.

Also, you can pick up the cup holder mount separately for about $10 and have 3 mounting methods. The cup holder mount part number is
ARKON CM033-G-2
