Root Droid X: Failed update, stuck in infinite loop for Motorola logo, conventional methods not working

Long story short, I failed trying to upgrade into custom firmware. Whenever it's turned on, it shows the Motorola logo, powers off for about 5 seconds, and loops back to the logo. I want to do a sbf fix, using RSD lite, but my phone will no longer boot into bootloader mode. It does boot into system recovery mode (though factory reset and wipe cache don't do anything) but whenever I try to apply update from sdcard, I get "assert failed: apply_patch_check". It seems this means a necessary system file is no longer on the phone.

It really looks like my only choice is an sbf reset, but without the bootloader menu I can't connect to my computer with a USB. Any help at all will be much appreciated!!
 
How are you trying to access the bootloader? From when the phone is off you need to hold camera, volume down, and power at the same time. That will take you to the bootloader.
 
I have tried that method, but the phone ignore the command and continues to reboot. I gave up holding it down around the 4th reboot.
 
Ah, that might've been it. Somewhat by dumb luck I was able to access the bootloader menu pressing the camera, power, and the middle of the volume buttons. Weird but now I can make some progress on restoring the phone.

After plugging in the USB cable, it will not connect to the computer. Instead it gives what looks like a common driver error for Windows 7 x64 saying it cannot find the S Flash OMAP3630 MI. Can anyone point me in the right direction?

Use the Linux boot disc method that's detailed at DroidXForums. No drivers needed and its never failed me. Super simple process after you burn the disc.
