Help Droid x gps overheating

Arutnev

Lurker
First extensive use of droid x as gps (purchased last August) this past week. After 3.5 hours in Motorola dock with charger plugged in an on-screen message advised me to charge the battery! When I took the phone out of the dock I notice it was very hot. When I reconnected the charger directly to the phone the battery indicator showed "0" charge and the phone would not boot. That night I charged the phone with the wall charger and it worked! So...the next day I tried again...with exactly the same results (yah, yah). Verizon says this is "normal" but I'm sure it wasn't normal last August when the salesman was extolling the virtues of the phone as a gps and selling me $50 in accessories for the purpose. Anyone with similar experience or a fix?

It might be a combination of the other applications in the background running along with the GPS. My battery usually doesn't charge when I use my phone as a GPS, it just stays where it's at. Like the power coming from the charger in my car is enough to sustain just the GPS function (Plus I also have bluetooth on and connected to my car radio for my music.)

Are there any other applications running in the background while your using the GPS?

edit: duh, I didn't read the OP closely enough. Ignore my babblings.

It seems that when the X (and probably most Android phones) gets to a certain temperature they refuse to charge. Its sorta like a failsafe way of maintaining the hardware and preventing damage. When I go on long trips and use my X as a GPS I will actually put it in front of the a/c for a minute or two while driving and off the charger.

I have used my X as my main GPS since I got it in August. Saturday on a 4 hour road trip, my X overheated and would not charge. This is the first time this has ever happened with my X. I'm wondering if the google nav update changed something to make the X work harder when using the gps/nav app. It's the only explanation I can come up with at this time.

Was your phone in direct sunlight? That adds to the overheat problem. During the middle of winter, I took several 10 hour trips and my battery charged with navigator and Slacker Radio going. More recently on an 8 hour trip to Florida, my phone had a tough time keeping up with the power demand. It very slowly depleted as the trip went on.

Edit: just thought to add that if you are on a long trip, it may help to turn the screen off for a while when you know where you are going. I.E Long stretch of highway. That helps.

Only bluetooth and got very few calls.

I would add to this - I have used my X many, many different times with Pandora/Slacker/etc running along with the GPS and never had an overheating problem until recently. Again, my opinion is possibly the latest update from Google nav has the CPU working harder. I will say that while using google nav that even when plugged into the cigarette charger that it is all but impossible to charge the battery. Pretty much you just keep the batt level where it is as the Nav program will eat up that much juice. I'm sure this is the same for everyone.
