DROID X hotspot range

Just wondering how close you have to be to the X when using it as a hotspot. I drop to 1x when I get in the house but placing it in my bay window I can get the 3G signal good.
Thanks in advance.

I understand that. In order for my phone to get the 3G signal, which will give the fastest data download/upload speed, I have to place my phone in the window. I am wondering how close to the phone I will have to be.
The phone not being a dedicated hotspot device makes me question what type of range it has.

What device are you connecting to the X? If it's an android phone, download Wifi Analyzer. That will tell you how strong the signal is and you can do some real time testing of how far away you can be and still get a decent connection.

I was going to connect an extra android phone and my laptop. I was trying to get an idea before I started paying the extra money each month for the hotspot. Sucks that they won't let me get any tether app on this phone....

Not real sure about the whole root thing. Guess I better do some reading up on that. I would hate for something to happen and me be out $600 to replace a phone....

I've turned mine on on the first floor of our house and had my wife's iphone or laptop connect to it on the second floor. So, unless you have concrete interior walls, you should get coverage throughout your house like a normal wifi modem.

Yeah...this thing must have the power output of a wireless router because I can pick up all over my house. While driving to Disney World, I had family in two different cars following one another. The people in the other car could get a great connection off my wifi.

You can just start your 3g hotspot then cycle your 3g radio Off then back On and bypass the $20/month fee. You can use the "easyswitch" widget from the market to toggle the 3g radio.

It continues to boggle my mind that it's against the rules to talk about r**ting a phone but it's ok to post about how to steal something!

It's not against the rules to discuss rooting. Where did you see that? For each phone section, there is a subforum called "All about Rooting" and this was placed by the owner/admins of this site.

Sorry, my mistake. I thought I was on the Verizon forum where it is against the rules to discuss rooting because it voids your warranty. However, my statement is true with regards the Verizon forum, where you can discuss methods to circumvent having to pay for services.

Def won't refute tethering being illegal. It sure is. And yes, while rooting is legal, it voids your warranty. I can see that the Verizon forum wouldn't want any talk of root. It must be quite a headache for them when people who don't know what they are doing attempt to root a phone and screw up. I saw a quote from a T-Mobile VP that said 50% of the phones that are returned for warranty are flashed with the factory software and then run fine. Go figure.

Seriously though? They allow you to talk about how to illegal tether in the VZW forums?

Yes, the mods will censor posts about rooting and links to sites that discull rooting. However, if someome posts about how to get around having to pay for using the hotspot feature or how to tether without paying..... nothing.... (Guess that doesn't void your warranty..... haha!)
