Help Droid X is the worst smartphone I have owned.

Granted, I have only owned 3. The Droid X has really been too much of a hassle for me, it might just have been my phone, I don't know, but this has been my experience.

First smartphone was the iPhone 3G. That lasted me about 3 years. Simple and did what I needed it to do, mostly web browsing and music. Not much of an app person. It worked well, I kept it nice, in a case and screen protector, and resold it in very good condition when I moved to Verizon w/ my cousins.

This was not much more than a year ago, Droid Incredible through Best Buy. Well, Droid X was being released but some trouble happened, cousins did something about switching owners on the account which voided warranty and 30 day return or something. I don't recall what exactly but it's idiotic. I asked Best Buy about returns, an employee told me yeah sure we can do that. I don't recall exactly why again, but they told me I could return it when the Droid X came out and basically do a swap, but that was past the 30 days. Employee said we can do that. Droid X came, sold out. I waited 2 weeks, called in a lot asking about restocks. It finally came in, I went to the store, I was told no, it's past 30 days.

Ok, forward a little, I am trying to really get that Droid X. I eventually manage to sell Dinc and buy a DX from a user here for a small loss. Maybe this is why the user sold it.

First off, physically, the back panel slid off way too easily + I didn't like a case for this phone as it made it too bulky for me. It would fall off all the time when pulling it out of my pocket, and occasional falls I might have had with the phone. This later was remedied by a newer back panel after my cousin also bought a Droid X (w/ extended battery) a few months later to replace his broken Dinc. Now his back panel is loose to though and he's had to tape it, looks ghetto.

I also felt the phone's back bottom side got too hot after use.

I don't mind performance like small choppiness rather than smoothness when sliding to new pages or opening app drawers. But there was a lot of freezing. Oh man. Music just froze all the time. It would stop at a song when I have shuffle all/repeat on, I'd try to look, I couldn't do anything, forcing me to do a shut down through removing the battery.

There was also just general freezing. The screen could be turned on/off, but I didn't get any feedback from touching it. It didn't go into the lock screen so I'm guessing it froze somehow, just the home screen page (without me doing to do anything more than view that screen) and needed a battery remove too.

Another issue, the phone would just restart itself probably from something that was active, like again, music, or on app I was using. I don't think it was ever from just idling. It would be that i'd think, huh, why isn't my music on anymore. I'd check the phone, and i think after unlocking it, it would just freeze up a little while and then restart itself.

edit: another small issue was camera app messing up and saying that it couldn't be opened at this time. I think I always had to force a restart to get it working again. Kinda time consuming and whatever I wanted to capture would be gone by then.

Lastly, I think the most pressing issue now, is black line that started showing up on my phone. It wasn't dead pixels on the screen, well kinda, since the line got thicker at times, then would get smaller again, so pixels came and went and came back. It was annoying, but I dealt with it. NOW, however, after turning off my phone before an airplane ride, then turning it on somewhere in the middle (i was bored, 12 hour flight), the line became a HUGE hole. There is now a huge black circle on the right side of my screen, slightly smaller than a homescreen icon. Nothing I can see there but darkness.

With all these problems, you can see why I want to upgrade to a new phone, and I'm mostly looking at the Samsung Galaxy Nexus. Problem is, I'm still locked into a contract for a while. At least, I think so. Really that thing with switching owners on the account confused me. I probably could have used the warranty on my phone.

edit: I checked vzw account managing online with my cousin's account and oddly enough, my line is actually eligible for a discounted upgrade while the other 2 lines aren't, but both have near same contract end dates at me. Lucky me I guess, yay

The DX has been the best smartphone I have ever owned. I also had an iPhone 3G, a HTC Incredible and a Samsung Fascinate.

QFT. I've owned a Treo 650, a Droid Eris and my Droid X. Of them all, I've liked my X the most. They've all been great pieces of technology, but the X has outshined the others.

The DX is my 4th smartphone and 2nd Android.
It's been just fine for me. I have and never will keep a phone in my pocket, I prefer the much easier access of a holster on my belt.

Switching screens, playing music and video, are all fine.
Yes it gets hot while in use, but I've never had a smartphone that didn't.

Sounds like you have a device with a bad display, but If I were you, I'd try a Factory data reset just to be sure it isn't a software problem for the display issues you're having.

For the freezing and unresponsiveness, it sounds like you should reformat your sd memory card. A bad file/filesystem on the sd card can cause all the problems you have been experiencing, especially while playing music.

the only time I had the screen freezing issues was on stock Froyo

oh, and I had/have the same battery door issue as you. no resolution there.

Just sounds like you had a bad phone, did you ever try to SBF or wipe your SD?

Don't know whats SBF and simple google search leads me to think it's not simple.

I have had the same issue on a couple of different SD cards. Went from the original to an 8GB Class 6, then a 32GB Class 2 that died during use on the phone after 2 months, then replaced it with the replacement for that with a 32gb class 4.

I did a factory reset a while ago but problems were still there. I haven't bothered again since it didn't seem to do anything the first time.

And nobody mistake me as a hater, just my experiences.

My X has been awesome and the best phone Ive had. A couple of months ago it started acting weird, so I did the software update and its been splendid ever since.

Pandora likes to randomly shut down, but thats an app conflict, not the hardware.

Now X2 I know of a couple of people who had some issues, including my husband, (I think he has too many apps working against each other IMO), but my OG X is still rocking. Ill have to be really impressed with a phone to replace it.

Not bad for a phone I only got to make my supervisor green ;-)

My X does the same stuff. It actually restarted itself while I was reading this post. It also likes to restart when calls come in. The camera being unable to open only seems to happen when I only have a limited window to take the particular photo. I'm anxiously awaiting the galaxy nexus.

Rogue app, corrupt/failing sdcard or overclocking can cause problems like that.

It's a bit drastic, but removing stuff from the sdcard you want to keep (pictures, +?) and doing a factory reset + clear sdcard might fix your problem.

If you can put music on your phone you can SBF.

What version of Android are you running?

When I was on Froyo my phone would either freeze or reboot about once a week and I was all stock and rooted. Since GB no issues at all. Will only freeze on me if I try to overclock to 1.35Ghz, stable at 1.3 running low voltage on Liberty 3.

My phone has been great. I am extremely rough on phones and I have had the same X since launch. I do have some issues but searching this forum or google I have found remedies for the problems I have.

For the battery door issue--- I had the same problem when I first got the phone. Very annoying. But if you look at the inside of the battery cover, on the bottom there is a rectangle metal piece with two U clamps. Take a small screwdriver and either expand (not much be careful) or collapse the U clamps. That should make it have a snug fit.

I did that and haven't had any more problems. The only time the cover comes off is when the thing decides to grow some wings.

I could tell the sliding back could become a problem, so I never took it off(or played with it) unless it had to come off. Mine holds just fine. Try tweaking the tabs and see if that helps. Mine does freeze up from time to time but it is repeatable with certain apps(Hanging With Friends especially) and I attribute that to the app and not the phone.
Never got the random reboot problem, thank God. It can get hot but not bad enough I can't hold it. But that is after constant use.
All in all it has had it's share of goofiness but my buddy's i-phone is constantly doing weird things.....that he gives to me to fix ;)

It sounds difficult at first, but we could all walk you through it. The video in my sig would be a help while your doing it.

Custom ROMs turned my DX into an awesome device. I say that I haven't had issues with mine, but I have never run the stock UI/ROM.

+1
I've owned several Treos in the past. The DX is my first Android phone, but much better than any other phone I've ever had. Is it perfect? No, but what few quirks it has are nothing compared to what I've had to put up with in the past. I'm very satisfied, just miss the physical keyboard I had with the Treos - which should be rectified when I decide to upgrade at some point...

Till then, I'll be enjoying my Droid X...:D

Try Swype. Once you get used to it, you can be faster one-handed with Swype than you can two handed with a physical keyboard.

If you don't like Swype, try TouchPal. I like its feature set much better than I did Swype.

I have yet to encounter an actual definition for the term SBF, but I have done it, and it wasn't hard. Just follow the instructions carefully. ( I have a hunch what SBF means, but it is apparently 'classified'. ) :D
