Droid X vs Samsung Galaxy S

Wait wait you drop the X for the captivate and moved to Pitt?

lol I was about to ask how you knew i was in Pitt(scared for a second)

yeah, I go to college here :)

and yeah, I took advantage of At & t and passed my X on down in the family and got a captivate!

Do the fasciante, vibrant, Captivate and Epic have the same megapixel amounts?
I know some have flash and some dont...or im not sure

All of them have 5 megapixel camera. The Fascinate and the Epic 4G are the only ones with flash. I am not sure exactly how or why the Vibrant takes better pictures than the Captivate, but that is what several reviewers are saying. The one I remember that definitely says that is Engadget's review.

The X has a dual-LED flash. However I can tell you that the camera on X is not very good, I take more blurry photos than I take sharp ones. I really think the physical shutter on a camera that small was a mistake made with the X, because it can't seem to fire fast enough to take good steady shots.

The biggest problem I have with the Galaxy S series is that I think Samsung was more interested in making a super-phone with great specs to shop to the carriers than they were in making a phone which is usefully functional for use. Sure, the PowerVR SGX 540 GPU is way powerful and the Super AMOLED screen sounds great. But in real-world use, how powerful your phone's GPU doesn't affect actual daily use unless your only use for a phone is to play games, in which case you made a mistake buying a phone instead of a PSP or Nintendo DS. In real-world use, the Super AMOLED has a black level of absolutely zero but what good is that when you're looking at text messages and emails and web pages, exactly? Especially since the PenTile subpixel matrix makes squinting at small text on a web page much harder since it's so much poorer than the subpixel matrix we're used to with LCDs. Apple definitely got that right with the iPhone 4's Retina Display, no phone has a sharper screen than iPhone 4. The Galaxy S has these crazy specs but they aren't any use for what people use smartphones for, and that's why I think Samsung got it wrong with that series of phones.

I agree and disagree here. You're right about the black levels. They are so impressive, and honestly, it might make black text look a little more black when you're trying to read a text message, but is it that big of a deal? No. Am I going to watch a ton of movies on my phone? No. Might I catch a movie on a long plane ride some time? Sure, but for the occasional plane ride, it's really not that big of a deal. For someone in the air or on a bus all the time, who is watching LOTS of movies on their smartphone, then yeah, for some this phone makes absolutely the most sense.

I don't think Samsung is marketing this as a serious work tool business focused smartphone. I think Samsung is marketing this as a total entertainment smartphone. And for that, the specs ring true. It has that gorgeous S-AMOLED screen, very sleek and smooth looks, video output that will hook to most any TV and let you output your games and other apps to it! What an entertainment powerhouse.

The Droid X, on the other hand, has slightly more resolution and screen size for more productivity, triple mics with noise cancelling, excellent talk time so you can be working on your phone and sending/receiving corporate emails all day long. In fact, they advertise it as the phone that makes a "better you" as in more powerful, productive and organized.

Check out the videos I posted back a while ago...Google Earth ran a lot smoother because of the dedicated GPU.

Everyone that is dismissing the GPU because they don't play games are overlooking other applications that it might help with -- maybe even adobe flash in Froyo. Even Droid X have a dedicated GPU from what someone said, though a notch down.

The Galaxy S series is immensely successful in Korea. Its all about perception. Overall the reviews on the Galaxy S series is positive.

Regarding black level. Most of the built-in apps on the Samsung Galaxy S series uses a black backgrounds ...so it is definitely more pleasant with absolute black than say, greyish black. Does it help with task itself? No. But it sure makes watching videos and navigating websites a lot more pleasant when you're awed by the colors.

Its just not the blacks. Black is only one distinction of SAMOLED. And I absolutely LOVE the responsiveness of the touchscreen. It is miles ahead of my old HD2. That and I see potentials in xda+super good spec phone. :)

You also make a great point here. I wouldn't dismiss the GPU at all, and the Droid X proves that even with a dedicated GPU you can still score some impressive battery life. Samsung did the right thing though, if they're pushing this, according to my theory, as a total entertainment phone. By putting the most powerful phone GPU available in it, the games are going to run the best on it. Smart choice in my opinion. Even though the weaker GPU on the DX is plenty capable to handle with ease all the 3D games on the market now, there will be bigger and more demanding games coming down the pipe as devices continue to improve their capabilities.

Those of us that are PC enthusiasts have long touted the merits of adding even a relatively anemic dedicated GPU versus the top integrated solutions.

How can dedicated GPUs in a smart phone (especially the ones with very large screens!) be anything but good for consumers?? Especially if it scales intelligently to avoid noticeably adverse effects on battery life.

You're right, that is strange. Let's hope that with all the other limitations the Verizon model has (2GB internal, no FFC, 384 RAM), that the camera is not one of them, and performs like the Vibrant instead.

For those of you Best Buy folks, the sku for the Fascinate looks like it's going to be 1200475. You can check and see if your store has any allocated yet. :P

Well do you think because of the flash is why it performs better?

I would recommend the Fascinate but I don't like the look of the Fascinate really....

I like the Captivate's look alot better

I think it's Vibrant, Captivate, Epic, and Fascinate(from best to worse)

The Vibrant doesn't have flash so I honestly have no idea why the Vibrant takes better pictures than the Captivate. Engadget said that based on their tests, the Vibrant took sharper pictures.

I think the Fascinate looks too much like the old iphone 3g. Sadly, that right there is enough to turn me away.

Is it really going to ship with Android 2.1? lmao!

Still looks better than that X that is just too big IMO. And 2.2 for the Galaxy S phones is coming in Sept..mid or end of, not sure yet so of course it is going to ship with 2.1.

Now since there is no date set for the Epic, that one may ship w/ 2.2 but that will depend on when the date is for its release.

There is no release date for froyo for the us bound galaxy s phones, the european version is getting it in sept, which came out in early june

You're kidding right? They already said September. That's the official statement.

Obviously each carrier is different, but for Samsung Vibrant, it is September.

Now, if you upgrade the firmware to the latest official one, disable Touchwiz, and run the 1-button lag fix program, you'll get Quadrant scores of 2250. Nearly 3 times the performance!! And it'll only go up once Froyo's officially released.

The interface has nothing to do with the lag, I really do wish people would stop spreading fud, fair enough if you don't like the interface but don't blame the lag on touchwiz.

The lag on the Galaxy S is due to Samsungs dodgy file system, NOT the interface, get it right.

I personally like LP and AWD more then touchwiz, touch wiz seems just ugly to me I dont know why I guess its personal preference.

Lots? What space is wasted?

What he means is that the Galaxy S is not much smaller than the X, but the X's has a much larger screen. There is very little plastic bezel on the X compared to the Galaxy S, so even though the screen is a lot bigger the physical dimensions of the whole phone aren't.

Yep, not everybody is going to like it but that's fair enough, plently of ways to customize your interface if you don't like it.

I don't have a problem with touchwiz and find it smooth and very responsive once the lagfix is applied.

It just seems too colorful to me and seems too iphonish , I like the plain vanillaness of the LauncherPro :-) I like using beautiful widget or something to give it some color

I think they were aiming to steal customers from iPhone users, so I think they're right on the money if everyone is complaining about it.
