Droid X vs Samsung Galaxy S

hey guys, sorry i didnt get to your questions until now. today was hectic! but i will try to get to all the questions that i can!

1. No. Not unless you root it.
2. No, unfortunately not. google maps and nav can be installed, but not google search.
3. battery is not too bad. i find it to be somewhere between the Dinc and the x. (not quite as good as the x, but not as bad as the inc). with proper management, it would last me 14-16 hours with moderate to heavy use.
What sort of things were you doing that got you only 14-16 hours? Like when you say heavy usage, you mean emailing, web browsing, several phone calls...that kind of stuff?

sund0wn,

Thanks for the info!

I may jump to the Fascinate but want to wait at least 30 days for people to report on the phone.

1) Any word on battery life?

2) What class is the SD card (16 GB?) that comes with it?

3) Is there a "lag" on the phone as has been reported with the Vibrant? They say it's due to the file system that Samsung has implemented.

1. answered. could be better, but also could be worse.

2. yes, 16. 2 internal. kinda disappointing, but oh well. 2GB is still quite a few apps. hopefully 2.2 will come sooner than later. at that point i would just move some of the larger or lesser used apps to the card.

3. i've never benched it. although, i believe it is still there, but i can't say i noticed it. it wasnt as if there was an obvious issue. even if it is, it was an easy fix on the other galaxies, so i wouldnt say it's a big issue.

i really hope i've given you all some good feedback. i think for those deciding between the fasc. and the x, i cant say there is a bad decision here. i think most x owners will say go with the x, and SF owners will say go with the SF. that's a testament to the fact that owners of both devices are satisfied with their purchases. i think it is important to play with both, because honestly, it would be difficult to determine which is performing better (especially if you used one one day, and the other the next). i think it really comes down to the UI and the design.

if i had to make a choice, it would be a really tough decision. however, i ordered the x on launch day, and i have to give the fascinate back, so i dont have much of a choice. but, so many phones go thru my hands, so it's not much of a commitment for me. i say, play with em both, and forget about how they look on paper. after all, real world user experience is what matters, not CPU scores, or picking the browser that loads 5% faster than the other.

I have to agree with that statement. In the end, whether you pick the X or the Fascinate, remember that we are all united as Android owners! We must not fight among ourselves but combine our strength to destroy Apple, the real enemy!

I really can't wait to get my hands on the Fascinate. I wonder if there is anyway to play with the phone without that giant cord plugged into the back. I want to have the full experience of having it in my hands without cords.

When I was making my mind up about the X, I asked one of the Verizon employees at the store if he had an X I could try pocketing (to test the size). He just handed me his, I dropped in my pocket, pulled it out, and handed it right back to him. He had a surprised look on his face when I did it, I guess he wasn't expecting that all I wanted to do was the pocket test. :D

The Verizon employees in stores always get the latest phones to demonstrate to potential customers. On Fascinate launch day, you should be able to walk into a Verizon store and spot an employee with a shiny new phone. Just don't drop it by accident, the employee won't appreciate it. ;)

Yea, when I went to AT&T to take a look at the Captivate the employee had a Captivate of his own. I just felt strange asking if I could try his, so I didn't. I will definitely ask when I go to look at the Fascinate.

dont feel strange. they are used to it. also, most stores have exact spec mock-ups, that are the right size and weight. they usually use them to demonstrate the vehicle mounts, and you can most certainly pocket them.

@sundOwn, thanks again for answering all the questions. I thought we scared you away. ha. :)

I really look forward to the Super AMOLED screen and the DLNA feature. I can't believe nobody has mentioned this useful feature at all.

In my humble opinion, the LED notification, or the lack of it, is really not that big of a deal. I never have the urge to have to answer every single phone call or email immediately. That's why we have voice mail. I like to control when to answer, and not to let them control you. Besides, I don't keep my phone on vibrate all the time. So I will hear the audio notification. Also, I look at my phone every now and then anyway to check for Twitter and Facebook updates, so it is no big deal. :) Like the other poster has said, after a week or two, you should adapt to it.

Although the X is a very good device, I still think that the finish is below par as a high-end device.

When I got my X I paid full price with the intention of going with the Fascinate in September when my 10 months of my one year contract was up. However, I love the X so much, I'm keeping it. The battery life is great, and I don't like not having the option of putting Google search on the Fascinate. I also don't like having just 2GB internal memory on the Fascinate.. The X has a helluva a good radio on it, too. Personally, I think Samsung started blowing their horn too early on this phone without being able to deliver.

Now I will probably use my discount on the HTC Merge in November.

I don't always carry my phone with me. Regardless of the volume of the ringtone, I may or may not hear the phone. With the notification light I can look at my phone any time during the day and tell immediately if I have a missed event, without turning the screen on, constantly.

Of course that situation may be different for others, but for me, it's what it is.

That's my situation too. I don't always keep my phone on me, and I want to be able to glance at my phone when I get back and immediately be able to tell if I missed a message instead of turning on the screen and burning battery life. Plus if I have to turn on the screen to see if I missed anything, I'd probably do some browsing or play a game while I'm in there. I'm a bad enough procrastinator as it is, so I don't need any encouragement :)

Nice luxury if you use the phone only for personal use, but I use mine for work email too. No good putting off replying to the boss for 4 hours just because I don't feel like it :) But yeah for personal stuff I answer at my leisure too. Sometimes I don't bother to check my voicemail for days.

Anybody else see that the Vibrant is going on BOGO sale soon? That's amazing. I have problems with all the US Galaxy S variants that stop me from considering them, but for those looking to get one a BOGO sale is an incredible value for a very powerful phone. It'd be awesome if the Captivate and/or Fascinate went on BOGO within the next few months. The Captivate is already selling for $0.01 at Amazon, etc. Might not be too long.

I paid full price for my Incredible. I used my upgrade for the X. I'm waiting until the Fascinate gets released to see what people complain about. I don't want to go to another set of problems with another phone. The X is running very smooth and fast right now. Plus it does what it was meant to do very well, being a phone.

I can't justify buying the Fascinate to replace the X at this point. The X is a hell of a phone. I also want to wait to see what 2.2 brings to the table.

picture quality is great. i have heard some claim it is oversaturated, but i think those people are trying to justify why their phone's screen is better. the display is amazing. and, for being an amoled, it is much better in the sun (than the DInc).
There are objective ways to measure some aspects of displays and all the more objective reviews and empirical measurements that I have seen seem to indicate that the AMOLED and Super AMOLED displays are oversaturated while that the Droid X display is about as close to ideal in that regards as any mobile phone device. However, this is just one of a number of factors that potentially contribute to overall perceived image quality and since that is a perceived quality, it is itself a subjective experience that may be different for each individual.

So while I believe that the oversaturation, along with the extremely high contrast ratio, of the Galaxy S device displays are both pretty well substantiated, the resulting perceived image quality is a subjective issue that everyone needs to decide for themselves. This is nothing new, I've worked in the pro AV industry for over 25 years and have seen many different interpretations of what people believe looks best in displays and have found that what is preferred is not always an image that is technically correct or the most accurate.

I really look forward to the Super AMOLED screen and the DLNA feature. I can't believe nobody has mentioned this useful feature at all.
Probably because DLNA is not necessarily relevant to everyone, not to mention that this is a feature supported by the Droid X and Droid 2 as well as the Fascinate.

I personally find it very handy even if just to see if there are any notifications if I've been away from the phone. In fact, I just got back to my desk and the LED notification made it easy to see that I had received a message in the short time that I was away.

Although the X is a very good device, I still think that the finish is below par as a high-end device.
Can you expand on this? This seems to be a totally subjective area so everyone's opinion is equally valid, however I am curious as to what in particular you find "below par"? Knowing that might provide some reference for others.

The Cliffs Notes version:
Galaxy S oversaturated = fact.
Whether you like how it looks = opinion.

I agree. Another example of people preferring something other than accuracy: loud bass in cars. Most loud car bass is just loud, not accurate, but people like it anyway. Most TVs and monitors in homes are miscalibrated, usually too bright, oversaturated, and too contrasty. Put my calibrated screens next to theirs and they'd pick theirs--different strokes.

Nothing wrong with liking oversaturated displays. After all, it's just entertainment so do what you like. Just don't try to claim that they're more accurate, because they're not.

A key element for a smartphone, a notification light. First thing I noticed between the phones, the DInc and the X. The light on the X will blink forever until you check the phone. The DInc does not. It's time limited.

I can't spend half my day turning my phone off and on to see if I have missed calls, emails or texts. That being said, having a notification light is one thing, not having one at all is another.

It takes literally two seconds to touch the lock button and see if you have any messages. The icons for whatever message you have will be at the top left corner and will not go away til you look at the messages.
Seriously takes two seconds to check. Push button, look at screen, no messages, put it down. If there are some, the symbol will let you know what type. I know that takes effort for some but it really isnt any effort at all.

I first off want to say that I am not one of the people that is complaining about the lack of a notification light. However, the problem with that is that turning the phone on and off frequently to check if you have messages or missed emails/calls can take a toll on the battery.

Not really. You can take an extra .5 second and touch the button again and it turns your screen off. You dont have to let it time out for whatever you have it set at. I have mine set for 1 minute so it wont turn off if im reading something but if im done reading or checking messages, i turn it off with the button when im done.

I went to the local Verizon store to play with the X and the Dinc. The phone is nice, but the look is not. I just do not understand why the 4 Android buttons at the bottom of the phone are just 4 tiny rectangles that wiggle. It gives the phone a cheap look in my humble opinion (it is never a good thing when some parts of a phone are wiggling). The body of the X is just not as polish and stunning like the HTC EVO, the Galaxy S line, the newly leaked HTC new phone (possibly EVO2), and of course the iPhone. In my humble opinion, these phones have the top of the line finish and look, and these are the phones that I measure against. The X just does not stack up. :)

If you're into glossy plastic ... :p

I finally got a chance to try the Vibrant today and man that thing feels cheap! No way would I give up my X for that. No contest! The X blows it away!

I'm still mind-boggling that people are trying to achieve TV-like accuracy with their phone. Its not going to happen people, not without a controlled light source, which isn't going to happen with phones in practical usage most of the time.

2.1 only sees 256mb of ram so I wouldn't worry about that.
2600+ quadrant score and hoping for 4000+ with 2.2
Pretty certain the 4000+ scores posted a few pages back are faked by tricking Quadrant.

I'm hoping for a score in the mid 3000s.

I'm not aiming for TV-like accuracy with a phone. I know that's not possible. But I'd rather more accurate than less accurate. That's just me. YMMV.

You're kinda missing the point, but hey, that's ok. Glancing at the phone 10-15 times a day vs. picking the phone up, turning it on, turning it off, putting the phone back on the desk. Multiply by 5 days a week, you're talking some time invested there bud. But that's my preference, it is obviously different for you.
