Droid X vs Samsung Galaxy S

Seems like pretty similar dimensions for both phones. Oh yeah the dx has a 4.3" screen. You'd think they could have squeezed that 4" screen in a package smaller than the x.

Im telling ya, i held my phone (Vibrant) next to a Droid X and the X was a half inch longer. Bigger screen yes but overall it is imo just too big. I cant see why ANYBODY would buy a Dell Streak...lol , that thing is just huge.

Haha I haven't been able to convince myself that a 5" is small enough, but I'd definetly give a 4.5" phone a try. Maybe 4.7, but its getting iffy there.

What he means is that the Galaxy S is not much smaller than the X, but the X's has a much larger screen. There is very little plastic bezel on the X compared to the Galaxy S, so even though the screen is a lot bigger the physical dimensions of the whole phone aren't.

Its a significant amount when referring to cell phone screen sizes. 3 tenths is a decent amount when the phones are fairly close sizes. I mean its obviously not as drastic as a 3.7" compared to 4.3".

Exactly. That is when I would say the Droid X screen is much larger when comparing it to the Droid Incredible, Droid 2 or iPhone 4. Not that any of this matters. I just thought it was a funny overexaggeration. Even now, I still think you saying "significant" is a bit much.

I guess it's all about perception. If you have something that's smaller and you then pickup something that's larger it's quite noticeable. If you use something that's larger, but you have nothing to compare it to, you really don't notice it, as much.

Totally makes sense. I can't even go back to my old ipod touch. It seems so pathetic. Which is a pity, since the Apple store has so many great games that would be wonderful on the X's larger screen.

Motorola really went all-out with the X form factor to maximize space dedicated to screen instead of plastic. I would recommend the Fascinate but I don't like the look of the Fascinate really....

I like the Captivate's look alot better

I think it's Vibrant, Captivate, Epic, and Fascinate(from best to worse)

To me the Epic is an easy #1. Things it has that none of the others do: 4G, front-facing cam, physical keyboard, and notification light. It also has a camera flash, which only the Fascinate has among the other 3. To me it's head-and-shoulders better than the other 3 unless you hate the physical keyboard.

Fascinate is #2 because it has a camera flash. I wouldn't use it myself, but we're talking specs here.

Captivate and Vibrant are neck-and-neck in terms of specs, but the Captivate wins with non-iPhone styling. On looks alone I like the Captivate the best of all 4. The more angular look is nice, and it feels amazingly thin in-hand. Some might feel it's too light, but light doesn't equal cheap.

That is actually my least favorite part of the Droid X's hardware design other than the buttons of the bottom. I don't like that hump at all. I do have to agree though that they could have added more screen real estate, and I am not sure why they didn't. Maybe they were looking for a nice medium between the size of the iPhone 4 and Droid Incredible screen and the Droid X and EVO screen.

Wow. I didn't know the Fascinate didn't have a notification light. What happens with the Galaxy S phones when you get a message, email or miss a phone call or something? I hope someone with the Vibrant can let me know.

now that release dates have been leaked, i can say i've had a fascinate for about a month (got it about a week after my x), and it is a great phone. in my pocket, i dont notice a difference between the two. but despite the differenes, i honestly think it is a tossup between the two.i honestly dont have much preference between touchwiz and blur, but then again. i use LP and dont use any of the UI widgets, so it doesnt matter much.
i will say that the x lags (but only for a second) every once in a while when i play games like homerun battle 3D, where the samsung rarely ever does. but, the x's camera is better.
and now that the x's HDMI has been hacked, that would push me over the edge if i had to choose.
i wish i was gonna have some more time with the Fascinate, though. unfortunately i have to ship it back this week when i get my new phone (not sure what it is gonna be yet). either phone is a great choice, it just comes down to personal preference.

some things i can answer, and some i cannot. but you are more than free to ask! now that specs have been posted on the internal info manager page (the intranet site where verizon employees go to view all equipment info), i can start giving up info. since retail employees are the last to receive info, once they do get the info, it might as well be public.

Can you answer if the gps is functional as compared to vibrant and captivate forms ?

yes. my buddy has a captivate, so i had a chance to compare the two. and, i experienced no GPS issues. i think this is possibly why verizon took so long to announce a release date. i mean, they also didnt wanna infringe on the x and d2 release dates too much (esp since we are going to see a few more android device in the coming months), but i do know they have been working on it, and they asked for feedback on the GPS from all of us who had them.

Since there is no notification light, what happens when you get a notification? Did you get a chance to compare speed with the Droid X? How is the picture quality? How is the call quality? Does it really only have 384MB of RAM? Does it really have 2GB of internal memory? Is there a 16GB microSD card that comes pre-installed?

also, for those curious about bing... it works well. it took some getting used to after using google maps/nav, but i do like it. if you dont like it, you can download google maps/navigation.

as far as rooting questions, i am sure the galaxy s method will work (and it's super simple) but we arent allowed to root unreleased phones given to us, so i didnt give it a try.

one thing that bothered me about the phone was a lack of LED notifications. i didnt realize how important that was to me until i didnt have it.

when i hear the notification, i just look at the phone (just like i do with my x). when it has been on vibrate, or if i havent had the phone on me, i just hit the lock button to look at the notification bar instead of looking for the light. it's not really too big of a deal.

picture quality is great. i have heard some claim it is oversaturated, but i think those people are trying to justify why their phone's screen is better. the display is amazing. and, for being an amoled, it is much better in the sun (than the DInc).

as far as speed goes, it's honestly a tossup. when i did browser comparisons, they literally were less than a second of difference between the time the link was clicked, and the time the page was fully loaded. sometimes the x won, sometimes the fascinate won. as far as launching apps, again, they were almost exactly the same. like i said before, when playing games, i experienced less lag with the fascinate. it wasnt a HUGE difference, but once in a while my x would experience a quick (half a second or less) lag, where i never saw it on the fascinate.

call quality was great. but, i live in denver where verizon has great coverage. i had the phone in the mountains with me a couple times, and there was nowhere i could use the x that i couldnt use the fascinate. in the month i've had the phone, i have not dropped a single call. there was a time or two i thought i did, but I had CS pull up my account to check, and it turned out it was on the other end.

as far as ram/internal/SD. yes/yes/yes. but, i honestly didnt notice the memory difference. i was a bit disappointed in the 2GB storage, but it still takes quite a few apps to fill that up. but, i know a lot of people will be running out of space.

Fix is easy to run just wondered if the addressed it. Only reason I wasn't gonna get phone us if I thought samsung wasn't going to be fully behind it. Sounds like they are gonna support it so I may be purchasing a new phone soon. Do you have any word on if and when froyo is coming ?

Thank you so much for answering all my questions thoroughly. That really helped. It really looks like I will be making the swap for the Fascinate. I still want to wait until the phone is out. I want to hold it and see if I like the feel of the phone.
