Root Droid X2... Flashed and running Molten

I'd just like to say first I've been very hesitent to flashing my phone because I know I'd go crazy if I had to be without a phone for an extended period if I were to screw it up badly. My first flash ever went very well, but I'm still wanting more now...

Bare with me here as I just woke up with no coffee yet. So if I talk in circles excuse me.

I was running GB 2.3.4 with moto blur and I had created a backup using the Dx2 bootstrapper by Koush. I created a backup and I saw the file in my SD card so I knew/hoped everything would be aright.

I cleared my data, system, and wiped all the cache. I installed the zip with molten v2.3 and everything booted fine and I am now running molten 2.3. My phone appears to be a lot smoother and faster. I've only had it running for about 20 hours so the real test will be to see how it preforms this week.


I'd like to create an image backup of my phone the way it is now.... Fully setup with molten and all my settings the way I have them. The only thing is, I can't install bootstrapper. I have the file on the root of my SD-ext card and I've installed it the same way I've done it before and the way I did it when I was running GB 2.3.4 w/ moto blur. I'm feeling daring and I'd like to try other ROMs based on 2.3.4 rather than having to install the leaked 2.3.5 build, then flash another rom. My ultimate goal down the line here though is to be on eclipse because it appears to be the most widely used DX2 rom. If anyone has any input on what I should do please explain.


On a side note, I am upable to log into "email" and yahoo mail. I'd like to use email as my hotmail account and yahoo mail well... for yahoo.

Aside from these 2 small details, I believe my phone has made a huge improvement. I hope to try out the liberty 2.3.4 rom if I can get bootstrapper working on my phone. In my app drawer I have 3 apps installed that may be of importance to point out: ROM manager, ROM toolbox, and system recovery... System recovery is the app that installed on my phone after running the APK file of BOOTSTAPPER; however, I am unable to power off my phone, plug it in the AC charger, and the recovery screen never appears as it use to.

I've never had the issue. You're sure you opened the .apk and installed System Recovery, ran the System Recovery app, tapped "Install Recovery", superuser permissions were granted, and tapped "Recovery Mode" before powering down?

I have done that and after tapping "recovery mode" my phone shuts down pretty instantly and it remains off. I have to power on the phone for it to boot back up.

I will try everything once more to reassure myself; however, the system recovery app is in my app drawer too... Not sure why I can't access it like I use to. Which is, powering off my phone and connecting my phone to the AC charger and that will power back on my phone for me.

I'd like to try other roms, but many of them require you to be on the sbf 2.3.5. From where my phone is right now, how would I go about installing GB 2.3.5???

This is how I would do it, if this is the correct way...

1) restore my phone to GB 2.3.4 w/ motoblur (how my phone was before molten)
2) install 2.3.5
3) flash eclipse rom

Yeah, it must be connected to the AC charger. USB won't cut it, and the car charger isn't supposed to either (however, I've had the recovery come on with the car charger, but it was only a couple times).

No. In fact, if you're installing another custom ROM you should always go back to stock first. That extra step can save you all kinds of possible trouble. It isn't always required, but I do it anyway. It's the best way to insure a good flash.

To get to 2.3.5, you first need to get back to stock. Here's the guide to do that. Then you update to 2.3.5. Here's the guide to update. Then just follow the steps you performed to flash to Molten and pay attention to that particular ROM's instructions.

Once you flash a few times, you'll get the hang of it pretty quick. I've used RSD to flash a SBF to my phone more times than I care to count, you'll get used to that quick too. Just remember to backup often and every time you're about to try something on your phone. Once you play around a little bit, look at the features of your particular ROM. Lots of them have scripts installed. Try playing around with some of them, too. There's a pretty comprehensive list in the All Things Root Guide here. The ones I make sure on every ROM are Flip-Flop, Speedy, Pulldown Toggles, and Battery Fix. But that's me.

And if you decide to settle down with a single ROM, my vote goes to CM7. Nothing is faster IMO.

My next rom will prolly be CM7, mainly because it is only for 2.3.4 systems and as you and others have stated, it is the fastest.

Honestly, I'm not sure. Perhaps things are performed while flashing that affect them and they need to be cleared before starting up your phone, or perhaps it really doesn't matter and it's just the way the dev went about things and it worked right for him. I do know that I followed the instructions exactly, and it flashed fine for me first time out.

I'm about to try and flashing CM7, because I just got a new TV and HDMI cable and molten doesn't support HDMI as well as other roms??? From the research I've done, molten and other big name roms don't offer hdmi... That really pisses me off.

Nope. I've never used mine, so haven't looked into it. I have a Revue, and it is linked to my computer over the WiFi, so I can do whatever with that.

• use RSD to SBF to 2.3.4
• download the 2.3.5 update (here is a faster link)
• rename the file to UPDATE
• put onto your sdcard
• turn off your phone
• hold vol down + power until you see fast boot at the top
• tap vol down until you see Android Recovery (if you pass it, DON'T tap vol up, you must keep going down until you find it again)
• tap vol up @ Android Recovery
• when you see the triangle w/ ! press vol up + vol down
• apply update from sdcard

Then root, add custom recovery, blah, blah, blah.

-Now that my phone is backed up, I want to flash a ROM.
-Say that rom doesn't work and a bootloop occurs or simply the rom doesn't work and I'm in need to do a restore.
Does clockworkmod still work?? How would someone go about restoring their phone in this situation...


My friend has a Droid X and this weekend I'll help him flash a ROM. Since I haven't been doing that much research about the DX (I will soon) I just don't want to be the cause of a busted phone. So that is why I'm curious, not just for him, but I also want to try more roms than just molten so i'd like to know if cwm still works even aftering flashing a busted rom.

The key is to make your backup on the external sd card. If you get stuck on bootloop you have to wipe cache and data. If your backup was in the internal card then you lose it. I've done that a few times. As an extra precaution I've copied my backup to my PC.

It should still work, just make sure you keep your phone in recovery mode, not charge mode. That way if something goes wrong, you simply power off your phone or do a battery pull, and then plug your phone into your wall charger (not USB or car charger) and it will go right into Bootstrap (CWM).
