you can do androot (you must use your droid to download it)
then download Rom Manager from market
as well as Droid X Bootstrap Recovery(1.99) i think
and open droid x bootstrap recovery hit the top button, and hit allow and hit ok
then open rom manager, go to download roms
in the stock section android 2.2 download it
then select both the options for your protection so you can revert back to a previous point if you get the M screen, and there ya go, it takes a bit of time, but thats 2.2
