Help DroidX freezing up

My DroidX is freezing up. Tried pulling the battery and reinstalling it numerous times. Wondering how to fix this? Do I need to reboot this thing, or go back to the factory settings, would either of these fix my problem? If so, could someone walk me through the process? Also wondering if my contact list and pictures will be saved if I go this route? If not, how do I save them if my phone keeps freezing up. Whats happening after I reinstall my battery is usually the first time I push any icon or tab it locks up and won't allow me to do anything. Thanks for the help.

Are you rooted? If not then do the following first do a reboot. If that does not work then do a factory reset settings>Privacy>factory reset

This will erase all your internal settings and google contacts, however google contacts will repopulate on it's own so don't worry about that. Your pictures are saved on your SD Card so they are safe.

Good Luck

I am not rooted. Not really sure what that even means. I have a stock phone with just a couple of apps downloaded. Sorry, just not up on the technical terms. I understand the factory reset since you walked me thru it, but can you explain how to reboot? Is it different from taking out the battery and just turning it on?
Thanks

Well actually a battery pull is even better than a reboot. If you hold down the power button a menu will pop up giving you the option to power off or reboot. Reboot is merely powering the phone off and then back on all in one step. Pulling the battery not only powers the phone off but cuts all power to the phone.
