Dropbox coming to Android

I found that the application you reference is pretty poor in comparison to "DroidBox" (also in the market, free and paid versions). The "Dropbox" app you mention is basically just the mobile Dropbox site. And, last time I checked, it didn't allow uploads (which "DroidBox pro" does).

For those that have already maxed out their free account, perhaps you can go back and remove your links, so that others who have not maxed out their free account can get some action?

So what's so sick about it or are you just trying to talk it up to get more space? I've had DropBox on my PC for a while now but haven't yet felt compelled to use it much.

The idea of it is pretty slick. You have a folder on your PC that you put files into, and the program on your desktop syncs it to the cloud. You can then access these files from your phone, or any pc via their web page.

For me I will use it to keep my pictures up to date on my phone/PC.

longtime and loyal user of dropbox here.

totally depends on your needs, but i use it literally every day. in school we work on teams and all our common documents are shared via dropbox (as an aside, we also use wave). at work i use it to share documents between more than 2 people when i don't want to email attachments. personally i use it to sync my keepass passwords between all my desktops, laptop, and droid.

to sync with android: dropbox doesn't have an app for android yet (although there's a ripoff one in market), but sugarsync does. sugarsync does essentially the same thing as dropbox. actually sugarsync has some capabilities that dropbox doesn't, like you can sync any folder(s), not just one. i still prefer dropbox for it's simplicity, so i just use sugarsync to sync my dropbox folder to my phone. the two work together seamlessly. or if you're not loyal to dropbox, you can skip that and just use sugarsync.

other uses: you can use it to sync your bookmarks, for example. also, since your files are also available via their website, you can access them even on computers that don't have dropbox installed. It has almost completely replaced my flash drive, and i never email attachments to myself anymore. anyway, there are many many possible uses.

edit: by the way, another option is microsoft live mesh. I've never used it but it's the same kind of thing.

EDIT: dropbox app now available in market.
EDIT: on jan 1, 2011, sugarsync will take back any referral bonus space you get. i suggest using dropbox unless you really need sugarsync's added functionality.

I would agree the OP was pimping their referral link.

I use it daily with clients and others in a colloborative way. It's super easy to share files with less technical folks and I like the fact that a copy does live online too. Well worth checking out.

I have thought a lot about why it would make sense for my Android and the only things I have come up with were photos and music sharing might be pretty slick. Anyone else have a good use? Basically using my phone like a wireless thumbdrive I guess.

For all those looking to sign up, if you use my referral link, I promise to dedicate my extra 250MB to world peace. Or puppies. Or kittens. Or maybe to find a hot chick. Something of importance to be sure.

Lol, well I promise not to use my extra 250 MB for anything illegal including but not limited to copyright infringement or anything else like that. ;) lol, just kidding, anyway, only had 1 person actually install it since I posted mine yesterday. I won't complain though, because that is still 250 MB more than I had before, that and 2 others signed up and just haven't installed it yet. So I am very grateful for this thread, thanks all.

Oh, I almost forgot, don't forget once you sign up to go to the getting started page and to complete 5 of the 6 items on the list for an additional free 250 MB. I never saw that before and I ended up with 250MB from just doing the tour real quick. Gotta love learning something new. :)

Has anyone found an app that works with this yet though? The official app looks awesome but the thought of waiting for 3 months to use it just tears me up. I could settle for a third party app till it comes out, if anyone knows of one. I tried to find the one everyone talked about in the dropbox forums but the site wouldn't install it for me, and it wasn't in the market. Thanks.

check out my post on the first page of this very thread. sugarsync will sync dropbox to android.

Just created a dropbox account using the referral link. Thanks. I've uploaded several files to my new account. I downloaded the app from the market, and it is working perfectly on my HTC Hero 1.5

Which app did you download? I checked out that sugarsync app and when I downloaded it, it said there was a free 2GB account. However, when I tried to create my account on their site they wanted a credit card and for me to sign up for a $40 a month plan with 30 days free. Since I hate using these "show us your financial info now and we will charge you later" schemes I will pass on sugarsync.

just fyi, for sugarsync, the referral link i posted should take you to the free 2GB plan. it's not a trial, and they won't ask you for any financial info. however, if that doesn't work, go here https://www.sugarsync.com/products/sync_pricing.html?linkid=module and scroll to the bottom of the page under the 3 quote-bubbles. it says "2GB free plan: not a trial but a free account with no credit cards and no monthly payment". click on that.

Hi xbrokdikdogx

I downloaded "dropbox" by "sendriod inc" from the market application on my HTC hero.

You will also have to download an application to read word docs if you plan to open these type of files. I downloaded the free version of documents to go 2.0 by dataviz. inc

Hope this helps.

Oceanlight, I'll check out your link and try to sing up that way.

Bomber, I didn't download that one because it isn't the official dropbox app but it says that it is based on mobile dropbox, and I have not seen in mobile dropbox any way to upload files. So I figured this app would not be better than just using the mobile version through the browser.

Edit:
Oceanlight, used your link to get sugarsync working. It's a shame it doesn't work. Every time I try to go into the magic briefcase it FC on me.
