Dual core or quad core?

So, a new year and a new phone needed. My old Desire is ready to be put out to pasture in favour of a younger, fitter model. She's done a cracking job, but it's time to move on :)

I am currently looking at the raft of quad core beauties coming out of MWC 2012 and trying to make up my mind which one is likely to give me best bang for buck. I'm seriously tempted to follow the zeitgeist and wait on a quad-core to match my TFP, but have started considering whether I really need four cores in a phone, given that I'll do any heavy lifting I need to on my tablet. I don't really game on my phone (except backgammon, and that doesn't really need much processing grunt).

I loved my Desire, so am mightily tempted by the One X. However, I quite fancy trying something from another stable, so am also tempted to wait and see what the Galaxy S3 might hold.

Alternatively, if it's likely that I'll never really need 4 (or 5) cores for a phone then there are some lovely looking phones in the Sony range, plus that Panasonic's looks are awesome (IMO). Or I could just go out tomorrow and get myself the still awesome Galaxy Nexus.

I could really do with some knowledgeable advice as to whether it's worth the wait for the new quad-core range? Conversely, would I be terribly dissapointed in 4 months when I have to sack off a recently purchased Nexus to upgrade to the SG3?

tl;dr - Time to upgrade, but is quad core on a phone worth waiting for?

I would get the Galaxy Nexus. Even though it only has 2 cores, it may be smoother than the coming 4 core phones. Remember, when people were reviewing the Nexus S last year many of them were saying it was much smoother than the other dual core phones that they used and they much preferred using the Nexus. Having stock ICS, updates straight from Google and not having to deal with any carrier bloatware will be very nice

I would wait for the quad. There will be programs and GUI that will need that power. Plus the quad core will have a longer life span because its ahead of the game and programs right now are being made for single and dual cores. Plus quad will have even better battery power with the 5th core being dedicated for battery management.

The same thing can't be said for the Galaxy Nexus. Originally it was set to be my next phone, I even bought the unlocked GSM model. With my Galaxy Nexus I experienced some occasional lag and slow down while playing graphic intensive games. So I sold it and bought a Galaxy Note, which was one of the best decisions I could've made. The Exynos (Galaxy Note) compared to the OMAP (Galaxy Nexus) processor made a huge difference in performance and drastically reduced any signs of lag. Many of the newer Quad Core phones or dual core phones with the S4 are much better than the OMAP 4460 used in the Galaxy Nexus.

My recommendation would be to give it a month or two and buy one of the newer high end devices. If you can wait it out for the Galaxy S 3 you should be quite happy.

If I was buying now it would be the HTC One X.

My HTC Desire HD is still giving excellent service though...

I would pick the One X also, looks like a pretty solid phone. I am curious to see how the battery life holds up on a 4G Quad core phone, but faster is usually better.

One X has the Tegra3 I think. The battery life on my TFP has been fine. Excellent, in fact. That said, I do think I see a marked difference between 'normal' and heavy use.

If the SG3 launch event is next month then at least we'll have the full menu of top end launches for most of 2012 to choose from (unless we're looking at another nexus for Jellybean later in the year).

There's certainly a lot of love for the Xperia S on XDA forums at the moment.

Does anyone think that the Panasonic 'Beluga' Power is going to be a contender. Aesthetically I think it looks very nice.

What sort of apps/OS functions do people think QC will be used for over the next couple of years?
