Dumb Question - Clearing Cache

How does one do this on the X?

phone off
hold home key, press power key, keep holding home key
you'll see the android dude with a !
press the search key
use volume keys to scroll to clear cache
use camera button to select

I use an app called Quick App Clean Cache. Works great.

What exactly does that do? Is it like clearing temp files on a pc?
