dust behind screen

I've now got a new Desire and it also has dust under the screen.

I'm not sure what to do now, as I really like the phone.

I may go down to the T-Mobile shop and inspect some handsets.

Sorry to hear that. It does seem to be most phones that are affected. I think some of the people that say they have no dust simply are not looking hard enough - we're not talking massive specs, normally very fine (half a pixel size) specs that can only be seen in certain light.

I have personally given up trying to find a dust free phone. Provided it does not get worse I can happily live with it. So far I have not need any new specs... so I am thinking the unit is sealed but that these bits got in before. Not ideal but I can live with it.

I think you're exactly right, mate. As a matter of fact, I think it may be a hazard of touchscreen phones as none of them seem to be excluded from this problem - iPhone included!

I think I'll try and find one in a store with minimal dust and keep that. In a way, I wish I'd kept my old handset as it wasn't that bad! I wonder if I could contact the courier and be reunited?!:D

Well my local T-Mobile store is out of stock so I can't do anything there. A third Desire should be with me tomorrow..... Here's hoping I have more luck with that!

Your right... type in any phone brand and model in google, and then add "dust under screen". You will find the same thing across the board. For interesting reading check out the iPad dust issues. One guy on a forum went through 5 before he found a totally dust free one.

Eventually u have to get to a point when you say, are a few specs of dust going to really stop me enjoying this product. That said, I totally understand the desire (no pun) to get a dust free one. Anyway, as ever, let us know how it goes.

Absolutely.

It's strange, but I've kind of lowered my expectations. I'd be willing to settle for a handset with a couple of tiny particles of dust under the screen - it's strange that a person should be doing that with a device of the Desire's stature, but that's life!

What is the alternative? Wait for the iPhone 4 or another handset only to find that has the same problem? As no phone seems to be excluded from this annoyance.

It's just irritating that a phone worth so much is not totally flawless! :D

I've been doing a little research into the dust problem and seems it's a fairly universal problem with the Desire and a lot of touchscreen handsets in general. It's simply a case of whether it's dust from when the screen is sealed at the point of manufacture, or whether it sneaks in due to the phone's construction and build.

I have seen people complaining about dust in their Desire in the UK and all over Europe - from France to Croatia - so it doesn't seem area specific, which rules out a dodgy batch with poor quality control.

There has been one constant in all of the complaints - it's usually on the left hand side and a lot of people think the volume rocker may be responsible.

Just thought I'd mention the above for anybody who may be interested and want to prevent getting dust under the screen if the above is true.

Had my phone since release ,no dust, been getting increasingly paranoid about getting some after reading a couple of threads here.
In fact i have just removed my Martin fields protector and held it up to one of our Halogen spots ,can see nothing !.
However what i did see is that where the diamonds bands on the digitiser cross it can appear as a point of light not unlike dust, untill you get light directly overhead then it just a bluey black nothingness.
If dust was to get in post manufacture for me it would have to be the hphone socket that i would be worried about ,this is always upright and clear of most cases, you can see light from screen and led light through it,i have purchased an Iphone headphone socket bung which fits perfectly.

Good shout about the diamond bands. I'd hate for people to confuse them with dust!

Hopefully your phone stays dust free, mate! I will definitely look into the iPhone headphone socket bung to fill the gap when I get my new handset tomorrow - providing it's dust free, of course! :D

I hope you get a good un this time ,the bungs are on ebay for 99p,described as iphone silicon port protectors ,good luck.

Ha, most my dust is on the right hand side. I don't think I have anything on the left. As I was walking back home after work yesterday I popped into the o2 shop and asked to play with their desire demo unit. Theirs had some monster dust under the screen... not loads, only about 3 specs or so, but BIG specs. Made me happy that, whilst I have more, i have tiny tiny specs that you can only see in direct sunlight if you hold the phone at a certain angle. The o2 phone dust was clear as day in all light conditions and this would bug the hell out of me.

As I've said before, the majority of Desires seem to have this "problem".

Cheers, mate.

Are they from China? If so, I think I have found them.

Totally agree, mate.

It's strange, as I've just been on another forum and a poster has mentioned that his Desire has no dust under the screen and he's not even heard of this problem!

It seems that getting a phone with minimal dust and then looking after it is the way forwards.

I am absolutely livid. My third Desire came this morning, complete with dust under the screen. As a matter of fact, the Desires I have received have all had progressively worse dust under the screen.

I'm going to my local T-Mobile store today and sorting this situation once and for all.

I only bought my desire 2 weeks ago and already there is a build up of dust under the screen, its mainly situated on the left hand side of the phone just below the volume rocker, before this there wasnt a speck, just a dead pixel which doesnt really bother me to much.
