Dust under Screen issue

I spoke with HTC again, and asked if the dust issue has been addressed. I was told that they have addressed the issue and that it appears to have only happened in a particular lot of phones. I also asked if I would receive a new phone or a refurb. They said, that it would be new and that they do not currently have any refurbs.

the refurb part is deff a lie on their part lmao.... but let me know when you get your new device if its all good.........

I am a HTC Hero Owner, has an almost identical hardware design to the N1...the dust issue is huge with us.

Over 45% of us have noticed dust under our display that is a HUGE percentage. Honestly, HTC hardware is absolute crap. I can tell you, regardless of what HTC says, this issue is not resolved, and you will continue to get dust under your display. I have been through 7, yes 7 of my phones, they all have gotten dust.

HTC sucks, its really too bad Google selected them.

So to the guys that have dust under the screen, I ask you this...........Do youse the trackball often????

I've had my phone naked in my pocket since I got it on Jan 6th. It's been in some dirty/lint filled pockets. Sometimes the headphone jack is filled with lint and I have to pick it out. Sometimes when I pull the phone out of my pocket, the screen is covered with lint and it's barely legible. I simply just wipe it off with my shirt and I have yet to get anything under the screen (and I would be anal up the wazoo about something like that). I have never touched my trackball though. Not once, never, not at all. I forget that it's even there actually.

anal up the wazoo made me lmao!!!!!!!

dude you got some dirty ass pants lmao........

Actually my pants aren't so bad. At work I have to change into standard issue uniforms that have lint all over them on most occasions. Maybe someone needs to cclean the lint basket in the dryer where they get laundered.....sometimes you find gum and other crud in the pockets. I always make sure that's not the case before I put the phone in there tho, LOL.

If it is the track ball, did anyone see this issue in the G1? I only had a G1 for about a month and did not see this. I sent mine back because of T-Mobiles lack of coverage at the time.

That's interesting as it runs counter to what a lot of others have experienced when doing a warranty swap. I wonder what the real truth is...

i've own my nexus from day one of it's release. i've checked every part of the screen and i havent noticed any dust. i didnt have any protection on my nexus until 2 weeks ago and it's been in my pants the whole time. i guesss i'm one of the lucky ones.

Heck I've had mine a month now completely unprotected(I like em naked:D) and I have not one spec of dust under the screen.

This thread is a perfect example of perception vs. reality. The person that has posted to THIS thread the MOST times doesn't even own a Nexus.

Not saying SOME don't have this issue, but if it were truly widespread, this thread would have as many views as the force update sticky thread. The vast majority of people are too busy updating their software rather than dealing with a dust under screen issue.

I don't think that's a valid comparison as the screen on the G1 was structurally separate from the body of the phone housing the trackball. I would rather say that lack of dust under the G1 screen strengthens the hypothesis. I have a MT3G though and I haven't noticed any in the 6 months I've had it. I do use the trackball infrequently, and I'm pretty consistent about keeping it clean around the trackball housing.

I had a lapse of brain activity there. I totally forgot about the screen being in a separate housing.

Absolutely. Since having received my Nexus, I check/participate in forums a lot less, as I'm busy playing/tinkering with the phone and have no complaints regarding it. People with problems are bound to post more.

Exactly. I saw this thread and it almost scared me away from the N1. Then I had a lightbulb go off in my head and decided to google "dust under screen." It seems like almost every other phone under the sun has had this "issue," i.e. it is not unique to the N1, which makes me question whether it is an "issue" at all or just an inevitable fact that almost all (non-intrinsically safe) mobile devices will inevitably get some dust under the screen due to openings and such. Just to put this into context, iPhone users are still reporting dust under their screens (google "iphone dust under screen 2010").

I have owned my nexus for a few weeks and have had no dust at all. actually have had absolutely no issues with mine. its been a superb device.... no complaints. can't wait for flash, it will turn this thing into a super phone. pumped.

I got mine on the 3rd day of release and have absolutely no dust under my screen. I use my trackball frequently. I also carry it out of the slip case in my pocket all day. So those of you having this problem must have a defect that should be fixed under warranty.

I am not convinced that it is because of the trackball. I occasionally see dust particals in the crevasse between the glass and casing of the phone. I think this is where the dust enters.

I just looked at my N1 under a high powered microscope at work. Damn it's dirty! The dust and dirt and crap in the earpiece is scary. There is a reasonable clearance gap around the glass screen to the casing which collects dust nicely. If this isn't sealed well at the bottom I can see dust getting in. However there are a few layers and I noticed that there are speckles in the sandwich between the top piece of glass and the capacitive layer. I also noticed a couple of fine scratches that are not visible in normal light, even direct bright sunlight. The microscope uses a pretty powerful array of lights so it brings up a terrifying amount of inclusions and defects in the screen area. I reccommend NOT looking at the screen this way as you'll be ever paranoid about what you see. These components are not high end optics so you're going to get some (acceptable) amount of flaws that aren't normally visible to the naked eye. I'd loved to see a close up of some of these claimed dust particles. You may find that they are tiny digs in the surface or sub surface of the material. Oh and the LED flash components are shambolic under a 'scope. All types of weird furry crap in them. All makes for an amusing Friday afternoon when I should be doing some work!

What I'd like to know about is: "furry crap"? =D I assume he means hair or carpet fur or pet fur or something, but lol.
