Root DX Rooted Trying To Flash But Camera Button Not Working

So I've seen this posted in several places and various forums but haven't been able to find an answer to this particular issue:

TLDR: I can't flash anything because somewhere along rooting and installing recovery the camera button stopped working, the camera button does work however since I can access the recovery menus during startup, I simply can't select menu items with it once in them. Also scrolled through the menu a few times to get the "Back Button" enabled, that also does not work.

Longer Version:

Have DX, that was updated to .621. I used the Bootable CD method to gain root.

I've installed

Clockwork Rom Manager - Set the recovery to Droid X (tried init2 as well)
Droid 2 Bootstrap

Went into Bootstrap and clicked "Bootstrap Recovery" and got the "Success!" message.
I then went into Rom Manager and was finally able to get a backup to work via the UI (not from recovery console)

When I try to install CM7.2 via the UI it fails with something like:

Line 1: unexpected character at 'r'
Syntax error in update script

When I get to the recovery menus the hardware camera button isn't working, and I've seen this issue popup with various people but haven't found a solution.

Any ideas?
