Dyson Vacuums: They Worth It?

LOL thanks. Which one does she have?

It's got the yellow ball - both of ours said "pet hair" on the box/application - came with an extra couch-cleaning thingy with mine, forgot to ask her.

Trust me - that's all the info you'll get on model numbers.

What do you guys think is best for an apartment with mainly hardwood?

Soft dustmop, Endust, and occasional Murphy's Soap as needed. Lemon oil every spring and red oil every fall if unsealed wood. That's how I used to do mine, back when I had them.

Alright. We ordered the DC24 (yellow ball model). Now we just need to wait for it to get here... which can take 6-8 weeks. We get to live with a barely working POS until then :/

I prefer power head canisters. I bought a used store brand (Montgomery Ward) that lasted for almost 20 years. I have always had cats and have/had to deal with tracked litter and cat hair on shag carpet. The 2 current vacs - an Oreck upright which came with a small canister and a Panasonic Powerhead are more than 7 years old. The Panny is closer to 12.
Plus the power heads also have hoses, so all you do is unplug the wand and put on another tool. You don't have to unwind or connect a hose, which is a PITA in my book.

I had a 3/4 hp MW just as you describe - loved it (cat and dog hair) - lasted forever, as you say.

The Dysons have the hose built into the handle, and self-caddy their attachments - very good design, works very well. Usually uprights aren't so good on the hose - not so with my Dyson.

The question I really wanna know is, how does the Dyson stack up against the iPhone? And I mean honestly, no fanboi input, just a real, honest to goodness comparison between the Dyson and the iPhone. Because after all, isn't that what this site is all about... comparing things to the iPhone?

Lol sorry, I just had to. :D

Anywho, I had a Dyson (regular model, cost $399 new) for about 4 years without any problems at all. Then I moved in with my fiancee who was REALLY hard on vacuums. She went through a vacuum a year she said, and the four broken vacuums out in her garage pretty much proved that to me.

Part of the problem was her pets... she had 5 dogs and 3 cats. So LOTS of pet hair. But her biggest problem was her kids. They would vacuum their rooms without picking anything up. Including change, screws and nails, small toys, etc... so when I brought my Dyson over I told her to tell her kids not to use it without her guidance because I didn't want them destroying my vacuum.

Well, it held up for about a year (her average) and then the shaft belt broke on it (the inner belt, not the one you can change yourself). She said it broke while she was using it, but I don't know that I buy it. At any rate, I took it in to Sears and they charged me $120 bucks to send it out and repair it. The only reason I didn't do it myself was because I couldn't find the parts anywhere to do it myself.

So if you're really hard on vacuums you may want to weigh that repair cost in with your decision. Heck $120 bucks can buy you a really nice vacuum all by itself! But I love Dyson vacuums. I left that one with her when we split up. But next time I'm on the market for a vacuum, I'm going to buy the ball Dyson.

The iPhone cleans better, but only works on carpets you buy from iTunes.

If your not cleaing with an iPhone, well then.....your not cleaning with an iPhone.

:D

Dysons are good middle range vacuums. They will not last 20 years like some of the expensive brands, but also will last longer and generally built better than lower priced brands.

Dog hair cloging the agitator brush is a constant problem, needing one to go in and manually remove hair on a regular schedule. Where other vacuums may burn out belts or melt things (as mentioned) the Dyson just doesn't clean as well when the agitator brush is clogged.

Overall, I think they are worth the cost and the wife likes using them. They are completely plastic molded though, and such I've had some plastic tabs break on some things. On our downstairs DC07 the tab has broken that keeps the dirt container closed. Everything still works, you just have to be careful when pulling the canister off to empty.

My biggest gripe with them is the power cable that they use. You'd think for that price they'd give you a superflex cable rather than the ridgid one they include. Kinks up far too often.

I'm very very happy with Hoover's knock off of the Dyson, $135 out the door, no shipping, no tax.

Sharondippity: Cordless vacuum - Hoover LiNX

I also have a cannister hoover with the wind tunnel technology, it was only $148. The cordless has no attachments, so I need to keep the cannister. I LOVE LOVE LOVE the cordless. Remember your first cordless telephone? This is the same kick in the pants

Wow I guess I did sound like a spammer. LOL I have no affiliation or get any credit for endorsing my vacuum! I'm just super excited, I'm a geek. Oh well.

Well, that and we're not super big on people promoting their own via linking for most any reason.

In future, say what you said, and then say, "link in my sig if anyone's interested" - totally keeps you off our radar, if you're a known good contributor such as yourself. ;)

Had I not already checked out your profile, left a visitor message and visited your site before you posted that, I would've whacked you on instinct alone. :p

Longhaired cat hair doesn't bother the Panasonic, but sewing/embroidery thread is the pits on the beater bars! So are fabric scraps.
The small Oreck canister will suck up all that, plus I have small attachments for keyboards, sewing machines, sergers. And I can reverse the hose and use it for a blower if need be. Small enough to do the car interiors easily. The Panasonic will do that without the power head, but it's bulkier.

Gotcha, but when this thread gets older, my home page link will not show that post on my site, only a direct link to it would find that post.

I really do like my cordless vacuum though. The power is surprising. I do have hardwood floors though, and having the beater brush off saves energy.

Yeap - as tiny a thing as a member link is, we spend more time discussing that than the big things. We strive to be fair and informative and allow freedom - but protecting others freedoms too has so much subtlety to it.

I find that intriguing as a geek. Doubt I could ever use one, tho - I live in the desert and with the gaggle of grandkids (and their pets too) constantly on the march thru here, I'd be afraid of exhausting that battery's recharge abilities! :D

We have the larger dyson ball. Which is awesome unit. No issues what so ever.

We also have the mini hand vac. That works good But the battery horrible. Only get a few minutes on it. They have newer ones that I would hope are better.

Well, we finally got out dyson. We ordered the dc24 ball, but received the dc24 animal. Basically, it's the same thing as the dc24 ball but purple, rather than yellow, and it comes with an added attachment. Didn't really want the attachment, but I am not complaining.

Works well so far, and I can actually vacuum without having a sneezing fit. Granted, all vacuums tend to work well out of the box, so weeks - months - years is what it will take for me to see if this was a good purchase or not. I will say, it seems very solidly built and it is the easiest to use/clean vacuum that I have ever owned.

I couldn't sink that kinda money in to one unless you had a cleaning buisness. I bought a bagless vac from wal mart for like 75 bucks. So far this thing sucked everything out the carpet. Its a small apt and almost fill the canister every use. So must be a good one. I just feel people that buys those dysons and electrolux are doing so to brag to others. Just like that fan they got. Just nothing more than to say look at what I got. Save your money and get something reasonable. Sure you can say look at hhow much you pay for your phone. I would say I use it everyday and how much would you use that vacuum? Maybe an hr once a week at best?,

I got the same thing from walmart, but I have really bad allergies, to the point that I can't vacuum. I literally have had sinus infections resulting from vacuuming. Until now my lady has been forced to do those types of chores. So far, this vacuum hasn't caused me issues. I know our budget vacuum was on it's way out after about two years, but we do also keep dogs. If this vacuum lasts 5+ years (as people here seem to claim it will) that is money well spent in my book.
