E-Bikes

The weather was lousy yesterday and today looks to be about the same. Fifty degrees is the predicted high with a strong wind from the South. I might have to get out and try to ride a bit in town where there is a bit of wind shelter. Today is supposed to be the nicest day in my ten day forecast. 😢

I went riding when it got into the high forties. They had the windy right but it managed to warm a few degrees above the forecast. I rode around in town until I got bored. I put on my balaclava and did one loop to the town South. I logged 26 miles before I put the bike up. It felt good to be riding but my nose has been running ever since my return. I was the only fool out riding this afternoon.

I've been fighting a cold ever since last Thursday. It was nice enough to ride yesterday but I was a good boy and stayed inside. I'm slowly feeling better but it will be too cold to ride this week. I'm missing my ride.

Well hope you feel better ;) my wife and I both had a bad cold 6 weeks ago and took us forever to get over, it lingered, so we know the feeling

I'm still recovering from that cold. It's pretty evident that my immune system isn't diddly anymore. Oh well.. I had a great run of being healthy. It is to warm above freezing and into the forties tomorrow. The high for Monday is to just squeak into the fifties. I have hopes that either Monday or Tuesday the snow packed (ice) residential roads will melt off and I can ride. I tried riding on some ice on the sidewalk last winter and it's dangerous. I'm anxious because today marked16 days since I last rode. I will just have to wait until I know it's safe. I'm ready!

A quick update: the forecasted highs was edited when I looked this morning and this week is to be around five degrees cooler each day. It almost reached forty today and there was a bit of slush on the roads this afternoon. Maybe ride Wednesday... maybe.

I drove my bike loop yesterday to see if I could ride it. It wasn't good. In town, snow melt is running across all of the low areas designed to drain the city. That means I would have to ride slow through and beyond each intersection a bit or have ice water sprayed on me. Once out of town, the sidewalk was clear of snow except where it was crossed by streets and roads. The snow plows had cleared the roads but piled it onto the sidewalks as it passed them. The worst area I travel was the sidewalk in the town South. Being as it is used by students, the city had removed the snow leaving a continuous pile on both sides of the six foot wide walk. One side or the other had snow melt running across the walk just about the entire length I travel. The highway siding that I use for my return trip had been plowed along with the state highway and was clear. If I don't get to ride today, tomorrow is looking very good. The high today is to be forty seven degrees and tomorrow fifty nine!

It was predicted to reach fifty degrees Wednesday but it didn't get there. The wind was out of the North and mid to high forties felt much colder. I didn't ride. Today the high was to be fifty nine so I headed out when it was in the mid fifties. The wind wasn't blowing so it felt warmer. In fact, I almost got hot before I came home.
I was hot for a reason, my phone and station agreed that it was sixty seven degrees and I was dressed for the fifties. It felt great to be riding again. I didn't see any other cyclists but I did see quite a few pedestrians. A lot of dog walkers were out and I noticed the doggie park I pass was very busy. Everyone was taking advantage of the first decent day of weather we've had in nearly a month. It was a great day to be out!! I logged 40 miles and my battery was low so I called it a day.

It was a bit cold with a gusty wind from the North today. I decided I would ride anyway. I had fun in spite of the weather. On my way South on the sidewalk I was suddenly passed by a young cyclist. He was wearing biking shorts and a t-shirt that had something air force printed on the back. He wave and weaved in front of me but really wasn't traveling much faster than I was. I was just cruising and was likely traveling under 20 mph. I made no effort to pass him but I remained close behind him. When we both started up the large hill that requires gear shifting and additional rider effort. The young man naturally slowed so I pulled up beside him. We eyed each other's bike. He had a nice and new looking road bike. He smiled at me and gestured to me to show off the e-bike. I dramatically upped the assistance to sport and took off. In sport with a bit more than normal effort my bike will climb the hill at 30mph and do 35 on a level surface. He laughed as I took off. I could see him getting smaller in my mirror. :)

I went riding once it warmed into the mid fifties. It topped out at sixty while I was riding. There was a strong South wind blowing or it would have been a nice day.
I saw three kids riding on e-bikes in town. They were riding and not pedaling. I guess they get off on effortless riding. I saw one jogger on the walk South. I think most people were put off by the chill of the wind. I dressed warm and enjoyed my ride. I logged 36 miles.

My phone's weather app says it's 58° and my station 64°. The stations near me all have the temperature in the sixties. I'm gearing up to ride. My local U has a basketball game in an hour and a half. I might miss some of it. It's too nice to sit.

It was beautiful outside today. I needed to get home to start my dinner on the smoker and I had a desire to see some of the basketball game or I would have grabbed another battery and rode some more. My phone said 71° was the high but my station says 73°. Whatever, with very little wind it was just a fantastic day to be riding. I did see a few riders but not the number I anticipated. It was still warming up when I came home so maybe more riders came out to enjoy the day. I logged 40 miles of fun today.

It was a very nice day and I got out and enjoyed it. It was in the low seventies and would have been considered a perfect weather day if not for a double digit wind from the South. It was still fun and I was glad to be out riding. I logged 31 miles.

I've been putting off posting this in hopes the condition would go away. I broke my back when I was a young man and was told without surgery I would be wheel chair bound. I refused the rod and fusion of my spine and have battled against the pains since. As years passed, the pain became less and though I'm crocked. For the most part I'm not in agony. My recent trip to California seemed to aggravate my back. Specifical my right disk or hip joint. Too much standing and walking slow took it's toll. The pain in my back is acute when I ride my bike. :( If I get off of the bike and lay down for a few minutes the pain subsides for a while. I'm not going to quit riding but want to explain the less miles per day I'm able to ride.

I didn't ride today. It warmed into the low fifties with a stiff wind from the North. I haven't given up riding tomorrow. It is supposed to be just a couple of degrees warmer but the wind is to be in the single digit range. I'll be riding if the weather permits.

The Harley needs a broken turn signal lens replaced and the front brake light switch worked on. I have the new lens and know what is wrong with the switch. Weather has been great for taking a ride but my health has not allowed it. Looking like another day for riding, instead I will be going to the dr office for some things ....

Sigh !

That's a true bummer. Riding gives such a great feeling of freedom and release from anxiety. And when you could use the escape the most, it's not doable. :( I hope conditions improve and you can enjoy the wind in your face again!

Worked on the taillight problem, took the brake light switch apaprt. It is broken and have ordered a new one ...

Pretty sure the new part will be here tomorrow when it is supposed to start raining.

In the meantime outside today :

It looks like perfect riding weather. It's supposed to warmer but rain here tomorrow as well. I have a Dr appointment in the morning. No doubt, it will rain about the time I get home. Riding in the rain is zero fun. Good luck on your repairs and I hope you get some good weather ahead.
Fortunately, my bikes are ready to ride. I'm just hanging out and waiting for it to warm up some. It's already warmer than it was yesterday but that pretty much put the chill on me. I'm thinking seriously about taking the Aquila out today. I haven't ridden it since I repaired the RCS. Though it's a two inch smaller frame with a smaller motor and less aggressive sensors and controller, it is like new and rides new. There is a noticeable difference between 1,400 miles and 22,000 miles. :)

They kept lowing the predicted high for today. I finally went riding when it was 58° and the high was to be 61°. I decided that it wasn't going to get much warmer so I might as well get after it. I rode the Aquila today. It's just different enough that it seems a different bike all together. It was fun enough to ride. Being a smaller bike, the distance between the seat and the handlebar is less. I've not measured it but it's noticeable. The rider posture is different and ends up, at last for me, putting more rider weight on my hands that causes them to go numb. Riding the bike, I spend more time riding with one hand or the other on the handlebar and often neither. The seat is moved back as far as it will go. I could lower the seat to take some weight off of my hands but then I wouldn't get a full leg extension while pedaling. If I had to ride the bike all of the time, I'd look for a seat post that has a crook in it that moved the seat further away from the handlebar. The bike, as is, is designed for a smaller rider.
The smaller motor and less aggressive tire tread allows better mileage per battery charge. I've been getting around 38 miles on the RCS and today the Aquila got 44 miles. I was riding the same route and in similar fashion. It's not a huge difference but the RCS burns more battery per mile. It is more responsive and displays more power but at a price.
Speaking of power, I saw it on full display today. The last residential addition I ride through before reaching the sidewalk South has a number of streets that intersect the main road I travel. As I approached one today a rider came screaming up and stopped to give me my due right of way. I recognized the bike from my bike research last fall. It has a front and rear hub motors and two batteries. I didn't save the search or I could post the brand. The young man pulled out behind me, passed me, and slowed so he could turn back off onto the next intersecting street. I guess he was traveling over fifty mph as he blew by me. He wasn't pedaling. He was laying over the bike like a rider on a crotch rocket. That sort of power and speed would be a lot of fun until you laid the bike down. A bicycle at that speed wouldn't be any fun to wipe out on.

Pretty sure having to lay the Harley down at any speed is not gonna be a pleasant experience either.

I have been almost hit by a car 3 times since I got it, and am always on the lookout, for the next one !
