E4GT on Virgin Mobile root questions

Crawshayi

Lurker
I'm not new to rooting or flashing custom roms, but I'm trying to help a friend that has a E4GT on Virgin and there's a few details I'm having trouble working out. He's on the official 4.1.2 unrooted at the moment.

First question is what's the best way to root? Does the One-Click method install a custom recovery where I can flash a custom rom right away or do I need to use Mobile Odin from there (I've never used Mobile Odin on my device, I simply use the recovery always)? Rwilco12's method seems good but then you have to use the Triangle Away and that just seems like an unnecessary step if I can avoid it.

Second is what do I have to do in order to get it to work correctly with Virgin Mobile? I've changed APNs before so I'm familiar, but I need specific info on what to change.

And finally I think he'll like AOSP roms the best, so is there anything special to know about them vs Touchwiz roms? Any suggestions on roms would be highly appreciated too.

Thanks for any and all help.

I believe you have to manually install a custom recovery, no matter what root method you use. At least, that's how it has been for me.
Mobile Odin is usually used to flash the recovery (EL26 or EL29 directboot).

AOSP ROMs will almost always have bugs on this phone.
For Cyanogenmod for example, speakerphone doesn't work nor does dock audio. The speaker sound is a little lower as well.

Since it's flashed over to virgin mobile, it'd be advised to use virgins root method so it doesn't mess with any of the flashed settings.

As already said, no matter what root method you use, you'll need to flash a custom recovery with odin or mobile odin.

As far as roms go, I never particularly was too keen with the touchwiz roms when I had my epic touch, however PACman rom was VERY good, I ran it for a long time until I got my S3.

I very much appreciate the help, but I didn't find a Virgin Mobile root method... could you provide the link and instructions for that? He's updated to the latest 4.1.2 OTA if that makes any difference. I think PACman will be what he wants, he doesn't care for Touchwiz.

edit: Wait... I think I just messed up... is this phone different from the Epic 4G Touch? If so then I just wasted your time
