EarBud Remote Controls: Hardware or Software?

Is my N7000's response to the earbud's inline remote controls burned into the hardware?

Or is it done by Android?

Where I'm going with this is maybe rooting the device would allow for a system image that handles the Apple standard - assuming that somebody took the trouble to write the code....

I read an article somewhere describing the differences between the apple control hardware and android. What I understood was that the resistance value was different between the control units. I'll do a bit of digging and see what I can find.
