Help Earpiece Distortion?

Has anyone had any problems with the earpiece being distorted? I believe it has happened twice to me so far. It happened earlier today when my mom called me and I could hardly make out what she was saying. It worked fine when she called back, but it was very annoying and I would hate to get a more important call and have to tell them to call back.

Also, since the first thing I thought to do was get my phone swapped out for a new one: since I got mine from Best Buy, do I have to go there to get a new one?

...people use smartphones as actual phones? Weird.

Seriously though, I have not had this problem with the ear piece being distorted. I did on my Blackberry if I turned it up too loud. Does it stay distorted no matter the volume? If so, maybe it is a weird blown speaker issue?

The volume didnt matter. Still not 100% sure what it was. Took it back to best buy and they exchanged it for me =P

This happened to my headphones suddenly a few months ago, and I lucked upon a simple fix that I can't locate now, but I found another way to skin this cat which yields the same lovely results. The pre-amp in the OS is wrongly configured to push the headphones with the same power as the main phone speaker, which distorts the crap out of the signal going to the headphones. If your phone is rooted you can get the free Root Browser app and change the power setting from 67 to 16 in the sound_mfg.txt file and you're good to go. Detailed instructions here:
