Root easiest way to go back to 2.2.1 from 2.2.2

my buddy had issues of his omtimus m freezing and rebooting so metro did the software update and now i cant root his phone like it was on 2.2.1. the bloatware drives him nuts whats the easiest way to go back to 2.2.1? im real used to doing this stuff on the ascend but this phone is a lil new to me although i rooted the 2.2.1 and removed bloatware very easy so hope it wont be too bad. i see theres a bunch of posts on this but it seems to vary alot how to do it the easiest

You don't need to drain the battery, just take out battery, hold down power/vol-dn/camera/back and plug the usb in, it will boot to S/W programming and then you can pop the battery in and get to work.
