Root Easily root the Optimus Showtime

No I meant adb reboot oem-unlock...you ran this command to unlock the bootloader on some LG devices (think the optimus g was one of them). But that don't work on this phone...haven't tried fastboot method.

Ah, cool! I have not heard of that option for adb! :)

Thank you for that information, Clark!

Titanium Backup is a must app for rooted phones. Allows you yo freeze those system or bloatware apps. I use TB Pro its the paid app but make using it a lil easier but the free version works just the same.

Ok I'm rooted..I was trying to backup using ClockworkMod Recovery in ROM Manager app but it says my device is not supported. Is there another way i can backup or should i unroot for now?

No you cannot install a recovery so there is no way to install a recovery at this time. There is no need ot unroot but if it makes you feel more comfortable than by all means go ahead.

We have a recovery compiled but we do not have a safe way to attempt to install it yet.

I decided to give the irc channel another shot for those interested. I started it on efnet and it is #optimusShowtime. More people working together may be able to accomplish getting a working recovery on the phone.

Well a friend of mine knows the situation with my phone and pointed me to this: https://github.com/djrbliss/loki It says various LG devices. I am going to play around and if I have anything worth noting I will report back.

Well I sent LG an email to see if there's a way to unlock the bootloader and this was their response:

Well if we can get that loki patch that I posted above to work on our device then we wont have to worry about a locked bootloader. It says S4 and various locked LG devices. Only reason I looked at it more than once was because of the "secure boot" crap that our device also has (look through this thread and see the people talking about secure boot failed)

It is worth a shot but the only reason I havent tried it yet is because to keep it honest.... wtf is ABOOT? Everything else needed I have already dumped and we already have a recovery (compiled.)

I'm not sure what aboot is or it's purpose (guessing something that checks to determine whether bootloader is locked or not?), but I've looked through the entire /dev folder and couldn't find that. However when I looked at /cache/recovery/last_log I did notice a sys_boot partition listed. Not sure if that would be the same thing as aboot though

Couple of aboot references that might help:

Omapboot - OMAPpedia

ABOOT: This is a utility which runs on the target side in SRAM. It has the capability to load and execute a secondary loader or kernel in the target SDRAM.

Lots of other good stuff in there, too.

You should be able to use foxfi/pdanet to tether via usb. Course if you want the connection to last more than a few minutes, you'll have to get the paid version. You don't have to root to use that method.

Don't own this phone but my brother just picked it. Has there been an attempt to install the recovery using fastboot or adb? Can you establish the shell command using adb to access to phone? If so can root (su) be established when the binaries are installed? If you get root to work can access the root filesystem then the flash_image binary can be installed and the recovery can be flashed using that. Although, you had mentioned a "safe" method for installing the recovery. Not sure if this method would be considered "safe." And as for "fastboot oem-unlock", I believe this has to be built into the bootloader. As for now, I see the only reason to root this phone is if you need applications that need root access, wish I knew more about LG, Nexus devices just make everything so easy :)

Well I have decided to shut down the IRC channel. For the last couple of months I have been the only one in it :(

I will leave it up for another day or 2 just to see if I can get a little help. I posted another thread talking about the xposed framework and would really like to get some nice themes going.

Between trying to start my business, just recovering from a OS reinstall (I lost a lot of things that werent on my backup), working on various other projects, and having a life that involves 2 kids driving me bonkers I would really appreciate any and all help I could get as far as getting stuff done on this device. I really dont have the time or resources to continue attempting to get things working on this phone by myself :(

Anyone that can help with themes or the recovery/kernel project I beg you to please stop by and chat on the IRC channel I made specifically for this device. I am found on efnet and the channel is #optimusshowtime.

I really want to make this device be as awesome as it cant but I cant keep on by myself.

As for the last person to post before this post. We can not use fastboot since our bootloader is locked. We cannot oem unlock it with adb (we have tried and someone even contacted LG over it in this thread) I have a recovery compiled (CWM touch) but you have the issue of secure boot checks. The device will know if a partition has been tampered with and will throw up a "Secure Boot Failed" error. I was looking at loki patching that addresses this very issue and I kind of got side tracked with other things I have going on. Ive been working on it but considering this is my only device right now I am still hesitant to flash it using this method. This is why I am putting out a call for help

I have an LG Optimus Showtime which is my first Android phone. I don't know what I'm doing at all and I'm worried about messing something up on my phone. All I want to be able to do is to take a screenshot. I've been told that holding down the Volume +/- at the same time will work, but it doesn't. When I do that it takes me to quick memo.

Can anyone help me out? Is it possible to take screenshots, or get a screenshot app that works that doesn't need the phone to be rooted? What does rooting the phone do? Are there risks to rooting the phone that I should be aware of before deciding to root my phone?
Thanks

Yes it's possible. Swipe down from the top of the screen and there's a button called Quick Memo. Tap that and click on the save icon to save your screenshot...no root needed

I rooted my LG L86c Optimus Showtime. I uninstalled some random apps that came with it I downloaded and used a app that could install the system apps like Twitter and Google Play Movies. Now I get "Secure Booting Unsuccessful Cause: errorlogo" I found that Google Play Movies has some DRM stuff in it that the phone checks for when it boots, and if it is not there, it fails the security test, and does not boot. I need help trying to get my phone in working order. Please ANYONE help me through this step by step.

Have you had any luck with this? I rooted and I too made the mistake of removing one too many system apps. Should have been satisfied getting rid of search, hangouts, twitter, and facebook but I had to push my luck with books, music, and movies.

And I too have a brick.

Hello my name is Mathew. I've had the Optimus showtime for a while now. I have rooted it before using the poot method and succeeded. But then I went messing around I believe I froze some of the system apps and ended up getting the error logo, unsuccessful boot error. :/ luckily I had a warranty on it still and they didn't ask questions really when they gave me a replacement. I don't want to make the same mistake again. I was wondering if that is the only thing that will give you that error. Like will just simply rooting the phone with poot give you that error? Or is it just when you remove the system apps? Will installing a custom rom give you an error of some sort and brick it? Just a few questions before I go rooting my phone again because it's really the only smart phone I have now and I use it all the time. Not to mention the 200 dollars that came out my own pocket. Thanks in advance for any info. I'm just trying to be cautious is all.

Rooting the device won't cause that, no matter what method you use. It's when you freeze or otherwise uninstall certain system apps that hook into the DRM (mainly Google Play Books, Music, and Video) that will cause it. Installing a custom rom will not work either because you need a custom recovery and there isn't a working one available at this time.

Alright. Guess it's safe to do then. I just won't go messing around freezing or uninstalling apps. Got plenty of space for everything since the phone already comes with 2gb app storage. Thanks for the reply. :)

you can root the phone by going into app store dl minstro 2 run it, then go to the internet and download poot.apk. dont run it till after u get superuser. It will root with that.

Well, I tried to root my LG Optimus Showtime using the guide here. Unfortunately, once it was rooted, it rebooted about 5 minutes later on it's own and is now stuck in 'Download is in progress. Do not disconnect cable.' at boot. I can't get it to be recognized when I connect it to the PC (it's not currently plugged into anything, though it says don't disconnect the cable). I have tried every key combo and trick I can find.
Please, for the love of all things Andriod, PLEASE someone help me figure this out. I don't have another cell and can't afford to buy a replacement anytime soon.
The root seemed to go smoothly. Super-user, Poot, reboot, no problem and then, 5 minutes later, it rebooted itself and has been stuck ever since.
Please tell me someone has SOME idea what I can do?
Thank you in advance!
