Root Easy Root and Milestone

Yes, I noticed too that some of my post are missing.

Anyway, whoever said "If you choose "customize the build.prop" it'll overwrite the one you already have now irretrievably." was incorrect cause G.O.T's OpenRecovery backs up files to the sd card before modifying them. Here is the shell script from the latest version of G.O.T's OpenRecovery which modifies the build.prop file. As you can see from the first few lines, the original build.prop is first backed up to the sd card.

Also, the xda-developers post you linked to shows the original OpenRecovery created by Skrilax_CZ. G.O.T's one is a modified version of the original OpenRecovery.

The multiupload link you posted for GOT_U2_03_11 TELUS-SERVICE.zip is just a leaked version of the official 2.1 bug fix update for the Telus milestone. It was leaked before the official release. The official version is out now and should be available as an OTA update. The update is also available as a service sbf file which you can download from this link. Flashing "Service" sbf files keeps your data intact. That is, you settings, sms, contacts, applications, etc will all be there after you flash service sbf files.

And here is the vulnerable recovery that you need to flash. Flashing vulnerable recovery sbf doesn't affect your data either. It only downgrades the recovery. Also, phone doesnt reboot "1 - 3 times" when you flash sbf files. It only reboots once. And in case of the vulnerable recovery sbf, flashing takes less than 10 seconds. And when you see the "Rebooting phone" message in RSD Lite and your phone's screen turns off, press and hold the d-pad up button again. That way the phone reboots to bootloader mode and RSD Lite should instantly show the message "PASS" which means the vulnerable recovery was flashed successfully.

Also you should have bootloader version 90.78 by now so that step "2. Press Camera button, then press Power. Hold them both till you see recovery screen." is no longer valid in your case. You need to press X + power button instead. X as in the letter X on the keyboard. Step 3, volume up + camera button is fine. And the update.zip file does NOT need to be unzipped, you need to leave it zipped.

Edit:

And about the nandroid backups, you can't without flashing vulnerable recovery. And you don't need to restore nandroid backups to unroot your phone. You can just delete the "su" and "Superuser.apk" manually. But yes, if you restore a nandroid backup that you created before rooting and overclocking your phone should be back to its original state.

Edit 2:

You can also flash that service sbf file again after rooting and overclocking to restore your phone to its original state. It will also restore the original recovery. And your data will remain intact. If you had any applications installed that required root, then they will of course no longer work.

This is where I should use the Telus upgrade from the Motorola site that you suggested earlier (https://rsddownload.motorola.com/do..._USASHLSMR2TLSB1B2B506D.0R_Service1FF.sbf.zip)

Does the sbf file actually contain the stock Android OS for my phone?

If, and when, Telus releases a 2.2 Froyo upgrade for my phone, should I go through this process again with the updated 2.2 sbf file?

You don't need to flash that sbf if you install the update over the air (Settings > About phone > System updates). The over the air update for the Telus Milestone should be out by now. Same goes for Android 2.2 if its ever released for the Milestone. Sometimes the sbf files are available before the OTA updates in which case you can choose to use the sbf files to update your phone manually. As I mentioned before, you can also use that sbf to unroot your phone if needed.

And yes it contains the stock Android 2.1 for the Telus Milestone.

To clarify points 8 and 9, I

Thanks ashketchum.

You've been really great.

I'm sure the process will go smoothly, but, I just don't want to get stuck on a step mid-way through the process.

Thanks again for all your help!

...dumb question of the moment. Say I've used the Easy Root path and that is all well and good, but now i want to get the nandroid thing going. Since I'm rooted already do I go right to flashing say, the G.O.T. open recovery, or do I still have to flash the vulnerable recovery?

It feels like the longer I swim these forums, the more confused I get. Ah, bring back Windows 3.1...sigh...

G.O.T's OpenRecovery is not "flashed". :) To use it, you need to "apply update.zip" from recovery mode every time. "Applying" the OpenRecovery update.zip doesn't make any permanent changes to your phone. And yes, you need to flash the vulnerable recovery first with RSD Lite to be able to "apply" that OpenRecovery update.zip. If you try to apply update.zip without flashing vulnerable recovery first, you will get "signature verification failed" error.

Hey all. I was wondering if any of the esteemed users of these forums have given Easy Root by Unstable Apps a shot for rooting the Milestone? The developers do mention that the milestone is covered. Anyone tried or heard anything?

I have the Milestone XT720 but I cannot use Easy Root cos it is not supported... :(

Yeah, I have the XT702 and it's the same thing. I e-mailed him to ask if he has any plans to add support for it in the future. Considering how he released a new version specifically for the Mexican CDMA version of the Milestone, chances seem good. I'm keeping my fingers crossed.

Yeah, I've seen the guide and I have it bookmarked. But this is my first Android phone and I'm kinda hesitant about rooting it at the moment. The app makes it so much simpler.

Also I got a reply from the developer, who said he's gonna work on adding support for the 702.

Once you root your phone you will of wished you had done it sooner! It opens it up to so much more tweaking and the latest and greatest things you can utilize your phone with!

Looks like it supports the XT701, but not 702 D:

EDIT: Scratch that, it works, but apparently for some phones it does not unlock the system partition, so I still can't get rid of the bloatware. I shall wait for EasyRoot!

Hi ashketchum,

Well, I installed G.O.T! Thanks for your help.

But, for some reason, if I attempt to overclock my phone (via the G.O.T menu), it hangs at the M logo.

I have tried all listed clock speeds (800, 900Mhz, etc), and the only way I can my phone to boot up again is by removing the overclocking completely.

Do you have any suggestions?

Thanks!

Have you tried the latest overclock app? Install it if you haven't already. Its available in the Market and is called Milestone/Droid Overclock. The latest version supports "autoload" of the overclock module on boot, which I am guessing means that it will automatically apply the overclock settings on boot.

Hi ashketchum,

Thanks for your reply.

I tried Milestone/Droid Overclock, and am able to overclock now! However, I can't seem to get the "autoload" to work properly. "autoload" is a relatively new feature, so I'm guessing there are some kinks still. I'm hoping a new version will be released soon that will resolve this.

But, at least I can overclock now (even if it's not persistent) :)

Thanks!

Hi Guys
I'm kinda new to this stuff..
I want to root my Milestone, and then overclock it.
But there's one thing I'm worried about:
If I rooted and overclocked my Milestone, and after a while it breaks...
Is it possible to still get my warranty?

...if they see (and they will) that you have rooted your phone, it'll be null and void as far as your warranty is concerned. So, be prepared, if possible, to have a backup or someway to get stock back onto your phone before you bring it in for service. Sometimes easier said than done, of course.

But don't let that discourage you from rooting.
