Easy video editing software

I just want to cut up videos (take a 3 min vid and take certain clips from it and sew together).

I just need pretty basic functions - I love effects and I have used Nero several years ago with success, but haven't tried it recently.
I need something straightforward without being too complex where I have to do tons of reading on it.

Any suggestions please?

It's been a while but usually I search CNET for avi splitters / joiners, look by freeware and sort by ratings. Loads of stuff about

There's a ton of free stuff out there that I'm sure you could find. I used to have a slew of spliiters/converters, but I honestly can't think of their names off the bat. I mainly use Adobe Premiere and Adobe After Effects.

Yeah premier is ok and on the professional video editing scene you could not say it was advanced next to suites such as Avid. That said for this task its probably overkill

Hey. I have used Corel Video Studio 12 I think it is. But you can download a 30 day trial from their website. Its pretty simple and has lots of flexibility not too expensive either. If you want to buy it after the trial period. I use it and its pretty good.

Thanks for all the answers.
My email alert was turned off for this post so I am seeing this now, lol.

I will have to play around. And I am on Win 7

Windows Live Movie Maker. It may not have MANY nice effects, but it does the basics - Splitting, Trimming etc. If you have money to spend, then get Sony Vegas, it can do the basics AND has many, many, many effects.

My hands-down favorite is VideoReDo TVSuite H.264. I got it because it works with (encrypted) TiVo files, but found that it's an excellent all-around video processing product. It can rip DVDs or take a variety of DVR (including Microsoft's MCE) files, edit them cuts-only, save them in a variety of file formats or author to DVD and even burn the disc. All in one app.

The thing that makes this application great is that it offers a high level of customization when saving or transcoding. It also supports more file formats than any other single product I've seen. It's dead-simple for a beginner to use with default profiles, and offers more advanced parameters and tweaks than any product under $1000. For simple editing, there's a basic product. (There's a comparison chart at the website.) It's a great product at a reasonable price.

Use the free trial and see for yourself.

I absolutely LOVE Filmora from Wondershare. Installed the trial and when I went to uninstall it, it offered me a lifetime license for $39 (us). Can't beat that price. Will render and handle 4k files with ease.
