Help EC05 or Unrooted Stock Eclair?

Kendall

Lurker
Hey gang,

I'm a simple business user with a dozen apps or a little better. Not a major power user. I need the basics to work smoothly and not a ton more, though "move to SD" would sure be nice as would bluetooth "voice command" operation.

I've been lurking since October and have scrutinized most every thread including the EC05 threads. I just can't seem to find a definitive answer. As near as I can tell, it seems more trouble than it's worth to accept the upgrade. If it ain't broke, don't fix it kind of a thing. But I'm not sure whether or not it's just a case of a few loud voices.

Would you agree? Or would you say that there is a fix for most of the issues that people are having and Froyo is just so awesome that I'd be crazy not to allow the OTA upgrade to install?

I don't have any "issues" but rather complaints. I don't like how they lump texts AND voice calls into the call log on Froyo. Call log should be voice calls! I also do not like how you cannot use the volume rocker to go from sound to vibrate to silent. You have to go into settings to get true silent - no vibrate. Then go back and undo it when you want vibrate back.

On the other hand, I doubt you will be able to update to Gingerbread (coming soon, supposedly) from 2.1.

meh froyo has a lot to offer, meanwhile gb.. not so much for end users. if you dont like froyo there is a tool called odin that can revert you back to factory 2.1 incase you dont like it :D

me personally.. i run ec05 syndicate.. call me a bit partial ;P

The selling point for me personally was the introduction of Flash. Do I use it all the time, certainly not!

The latest and greatest options are always helpful and useful too.

It is worth noting, of course, that if you HATE EC05, you can always get back to Eclair if you really want to. :)

Thanks for the feedback, folks!

A few more questions...

1. Is there no workaround for Flash?
2. Does Skyfire only help for Flash video?
3. Do I need to root to use Odin?
4. If I "flash" back to Eclair, will I lose my data if I don't back it up, i.e... is it a PITA?

1)flash on 2.1 i think is possible IIRC but wasnt done for the epic..
2) meh skyfire isnt really worth it when you can have flash 10.2 fully working..
3) no odin is the program you use to flash images/kernels/modems etc most of the time its to return to stock
4) no, you can use titanium backup and save your data to the sd card and restore it
