Help ehrpd vs evdo

what is the difference? i thought ehrpd was just to help transition between 3g and 4g...yet while i have my phone in cdma only mode right now and i'm not in a 4g area, my phone says ehrpd...

i'm wondering if this has something to do with why it took so long for my phone to reconnect to the network this morning after being on wifi all night...

I was thinking it helped go from 3g to wifi and back still. Those transitions are always seamless (and almost instant) for me. Whereas my Droid would take a lot longer. Weird that it took long for you. I'm not sure why it stays erhpd. The only time I've seen evdo on my Nexus is when 4g went out last week and it took 3 hours for 3g to connect.

does *#*#4636#*#* then set preferred network mode to "evdo only" work?

You really don't want to do that as you could end up booting yourself of the network. Think of eHrpd as a network within a network. You will see no performance difference between it and evdo. All 4g devices will be on ehrpd while in 3g mode. The only time you should ever be on evdo is if the LTE network is down completely.

eHRPD is not something that's rivaling EVDO... It's just a layer or a hook that triggers EVDO when switching from LTE to EVDO(CDMA) network. It's necessary when you have a network that's not entirely GSM in order to properly (seamlessly) switches between them.
